Belania's life in Cork

Post by Belania »

Belania was fed up paying too much for her lodgings so when she heard of an old abandoned house on the outskirts of town she jumped at the chance. It was soon to be knocked down but with a bit of persuasion and alot of haggling she managed to get the land owner to let her live in it. Of course it needed a ton of work but she was not shy of hard work and got stuck in that day on the roof. She was not much of a builder but she had common sense and a smart mind. She searched the forest nearby for wood she could use to which there was a lot. By the end of the day the roof was covered again and secure, or at least she hoped and she made her way back to town for what was to be her last night in the inn.

The next day she returned with cart full of stuff a builder from town to check her roof having worked herself into a tizzy the night before thinking it would not be safe. She left him to it and started to clear out the inside of the house. There was lots of rubbish and old furniture which she had to drag outside but as she stood in the now empty front room she smiled. Turning she went back to her cart and pulled out a broom and some cloths and began the long task of cleaning. The house wasnt big...one room at the front, one at the back and small cooking area to the side and a room for washing in...but it was perfect for Belania.

It was the small hours of the morning when she finally stopped. The builder had long since left and she was working by candle light. Wiping the last bit of floor she stood up and winced. Her left leg throbbing. Quickly she took a seat on the small stool she had found and slowly rubbed her leg until it felt better. She should have known her scar would give her bother after such a long days work but she was having such a good time she had forgot about it.

Yawning she stood and doused the candles in the room and walked to the room at the back where she had made a make shift bed from blankets and throws she purchased earlier that day. Until she could have a proper bed made for her this would have to do. Moving to the basin at the side she washed her hands and face and then went to bed knowing she still had alot of work to do tomorrow.

The following morning Belania woke and got right to work. Well more of a went to town to eat and visit the market. She had been saving since the day she arrived in Cork and had a good little pocket of money to buy the things she needed for her new home. Her leg was really stiff this morning and it made her progress to town slow but she eventually made it and after a bit to eat in one of the loal taverns she went right to the market place. By the time she left her cart was full and she had managed to find herself a carpenter to make her a bed. What she couldnt fit in her cart she had bartered to get it delivered to her new home later that day. With a smile on her face she left the market and made her way back home.

By late afternoon Belania's new home was definatly coming together. there was a chill in the air so she had chopped some of the old furniture for wood and built a fire in the old fireplace that was in the front room. It was amazing how fast the house warmed up from one fire.

Moving from room to room she double checked everythign incase she needed another trip to the market but luckily it looked like she had manged to get the basics and the rest would be arriving soon. Just as she thought that she heard a cart pull up outside and, looking out the window was happy to see it was her furniture.

For the next little while Belania directed the men as to where everything should go....first was the small couch, followed by a small table and a couple of wodden chairs. Then she had her dresser and wardrobe taken to her room, they were small but so was her room and she hoped they would fit. Finally the men brought in her bed. This she wasnt expecting but one of the men explained that the carpenter had one he was almost finished when she asked him. He is a bit grumpy that way....never wants you to think he is nice and of course that you are doing him a hardship by asking for something one of the men said and Belania laughed. Well do thank him for me if you see him she replied. Searching her pouch she found four freznics and gave the men two each for thier troubles before thanking them and closing the door.

Tonight she would sleep in a proper bed and cook her own dinner. The thought made her excited. Not that she was much of a cook but she was sure she could make something. Lighting the fire in the cooking area she placed a large pan over it and filled it with water. Best get cleaned up she said outloud as she waited for the water to heat. Tonight was going to be a good night.

Later that night Belania was woke by a loud banging sound followed by a crash. Her house was dark and cold and she could feel a wind blow through it. Reaching for her clothes she quickly dressed and lit the candle by the bed. Another bang came from the front of the house making her jump and she could hear the wind outside swirling around the walls of her new home.

When she stepped out of her room she gasped....part of her new roof had been blown off. The builder must not have finished it or he had done a rubbish job, either way she now had a hole over her front room. Not that it was big but she figured she was going to have to go up there and cover it. Going back to her room she pulled on her boots and some warmer clothes then placed the candle into its glass house before stepping out into the night.

Standing back from the house she could see where she needed to be and luckily for her the builder had left his ladder and some tools. Maybe he wasnt finished she thought, feeling a little bad for thinking he had done a bad job. The wind seemed to have died down a little but she knew she would have to be fast before it picked up again. Grabbing a couple of planks of wood that were left, a hammer and a couple of nails she quickly climbed the ladder onto her roof and began to cover the hole.

It wasnt long before the wind started to pick up and she hadnt even managed to fix one plank over the hole, carpentry not her best skill. Just then a strong gust of wind blew past her, almost knocking her over. She managed to stay steady but the ladder didnt and it fell to the ground with a thud. Dammit she shouted into the wind. She had no way of getting down now and no one lived even remotely close to her to be passing by, not that anyone would be out at this time of night or in this weather anyway. Stupid stupid stupid she said as she looked over the edge and wondered if she could jump down safely. Sighing, Belania decided it was best to finish the repair since she was up there and continued with the original plan.

The wind was cold and hard by the time she had finished. Heavy rain had started to fall too, making her roof even more dangerous than it was. She looked over the edge again and grumbled, she didnt think her leg would enjoy hitting the ground too much....just perfect...she said outloud with a dry chuckle...looks like im here for the night.

Night time was one of his favourite times to fly. There was something about the embrace of the darkness that was comforting to him. He didn't need to hide his wings, and even though there were no thermal drafts to work with, this evening there was enough winds in the night sky that he didn't need to work too hard, but at the same time it gave him a chance to stretch his wings. So here he was, flying through the night sky, exploring his new world. He eyes pierced the darkness, his pupils dilated to the point where his eyes seemed completely black, and everything below his was as if in a pale grey of early morning.

Nenrael swooped up into a blank of clouds as he felt the beginnings of rain start to fall. While the moisture wouldn't hurt him, the extra weight on his wings would increase how much he had to work. Pulling up through the low level clouds, he quickly passed through the layer to start flying above the dark mass. Feeling the wind in his face, 'Rael smiled and enjoyed the freedom of flying. His tuned his sharp hearing to listen to the sounds of the storm below him, listening for the sounds of electricity and lightning building. While he was resilient, he didn't particularly enjoy the jolt that a short of lightning would give him.

As he flew about and listened to the storm below, his ears detected a very faint, Dammit!, come from below. Frowning, Nenrael turned his head towards where he thought he heard the sound come from below. Straining to hear if there was anything further, moments later he heard someone shout, Stupid stupid stupid!. Frowning, he dropped one shoulder and began circling back. 'I wonder if someone is in trouble... I'd best check and see.'

As Nenrael circled lower, down through the clouds and into the rain below, his started to scan the ground below. Off in the distance he spied a town then heard, just perfect, looks like im here for the night. Head swiveling, Nenrael's eyes sought out the source of the voice, and quickly spied a huddled figure on a small abode nestled in among the trees off a road. Dropping his shoulders and angling his wings, he began a quick decent down to the rooftop, and just before he collided with its' surface, spread forth his wings to arrest his decent, and pivoted his body down so that his feet touched down on the roof top, and then landed in a crouch facing the person huddled against the rain.

"You seem to be stuck. May I be of assistance?"

Belania felt the rain stop for a second and looked up. Her eyes widened at the image infront of her. Wings....wings that probably spanned the whole length of her house if not more. Then they were gone and the rain was back on her face....she had to squint to see the man in front of her but she knew of only one man it could be and her mood lightened a little.

"You seem to be stuck. May I be of assistance?"

Looking around she felt her face go a little red. Well...my ladders fell and I was trying to fix this hole she said motioning towards where the hole was not really taking her eyes off of the man on her house.....anyways....short story shorter, I got stuck up here. She must have looked really silly. No doubt completely drenched and looking a mess, the drop to the ground was not that high, a person could easily ease themselves down but Belania knew the effect a bad landing would have on her leg. What are you doing here?

As Nenrael crouched on the person's rooftop, he watched as he, no she turned to him. As she began to speak, he realized that he knew her... Belania, having met her in the taverns a few times. He noticed how she seemed to be drenched as the rains continued, shivered, and he automatically stepped forward and spread out his wings to cover both of them. Looking down into her eyes, he heard her explaination and her question, "What are you doing here?"

Smiling down at her, he shrugged. "Well, I could say that I was out here with the sole purpose of rescuing you, but honestly, I like to fly at night and stretch my wings. And I happened to be flying overhead when I heard someone below saying that they were stuck, so I flew down, saw you on the roof, and well, here I am."

The rain seemed to stop again as Rael moved his wings around her. She remembered the first time she had seen his wings and how much in awe she was but right now she was just happy to be out of the rain. Well im glad you were passing, thank you she replied and started to shivver uncontrolably and her leg began to throb from the cold. Think we could get down now?

'Think we could get down now?'

Seeing how Belania seemed to be starting to shiver in the cold night air, Nenrael nodded and stepped closer to her and wrapped his arms about her. "Hold on tight." And with that, he crouched down, and lifted and angled his wings for a downward thrust, and then launched them both up into the night air.

Holding her close, with the rain pelting his face, 'Rael flapped his wings a few times and then spread them out and coasted down to the ground, swinging around and aiming for her front door. Landing with a light step, he lowered her down and set her onto the ground.

"You should make sure you dry off well... you're shivering. Maybe get a nice fire going too, otherwise you might catch a cold."

Before she knew it Rael had launched them into the air. She held on so tight her fingers were starting to hurt. When he landed she held on for a few minutes more before realising she was on the ground. Thank you she whispered and stepped towards her door. Stopping she turned back to look at him. He was soaking from the rain. Would you like to come in and get dried off too? it seemed only right she offered him since he had just saved her, besides its not often you meet an angel.

Nenrael smiled as she seemed to want hold on to him to. He admitted to himself that he too enjoyed it, and noticed how cold she felt. She whispers a thank you to him and he smiled and said, "My pleasure Ania."

She then stepped away and asked him if he wanted to come in as well to dry off, 'Rael realized just how wet and soaked he had become. Nodding his head, 'Thank you," he stepped after her into her house.
