Juan's studies to learn to read were going very well. He had succeeded in memorizing all of the material that Serene had left for him. He was able to keep good books this time while she was gone. The pictures Serene had drawn made everything easier. He was pleased with himself.

He had even figured out a letter after much work that Serene had sent him.
Dear Juan,

Please switch my broccoli field to a chicken field.
{drawing of broccoli} ==> {drawing of chickens in 4 coops}

I need more meat to butcher and eggs to juggle.
{drawing of chicken legs) and {drawing of eggs}

Sincerely,
Serene
Once he had figured out what was desired, he quickly got to work and started building 4 coops on the veggie field. He was very good at building things with his hands.

He was able to pick up chickens from the vice-royalty of Bravia at a good price. He wondered if maybe a stray broccoli would grow now and again. The chickens would eat it, he was sure. He had not taken the time to do more than just flatten out the veggie field.

He gave the chickens some oats. They didn't seem hungry for corn at the moment, but they did appreciate the oats.

Serene came home. She was very pleased with his work. She gave him a bonus. Juan beamed with pride. His life was good. He had gotten it right!

Juan was pleased. His life was good. He had gotten used to having chickens. He was really good at finding the eggs. The hens were good at hiding them and sometimes they seemed to escape the coops and lay eggs around the town.

Serene had given him the order to have the chickens slaughtered today. A part of him resented this order. He was fond of the chickens and they were healthy. They were laying eggs well, so why did they have to be slaughtered already. Another part of himself would not even admit that having the chickens slaughtered bothered him at all.

He went to town and found Teide to slaughter the chickens. He showed her around to be able to find all of the supplies needed. Once he was sure she had what she needed, he went off to rest in his hammock and look at his book. Though the noise was very distracting.

Juan looked a the cut on his hand. The bandage had healed it amazingly. He had cut it while learning to butcher chickens. He wiggled his fingers.

He sat and watch Serene finish the butchering. She made it look so easy. He was surprised about the broth. Normally that part of the chicken was wasted cause it was so scrawny.

He sat and pet the puppy. The puppy was very soothing.

Serene had promised him a bonus if he did well while she was travelling. This made him smile. He loved having the estate to himself. He was fond of the chickens and was very good at finding the eggs. This would be a vacation for him.

The bonus was welcome, but not as nice as having the place to himself. Juan liked having the place to himself. He got along well with the chickens. While Serene was gone, he could pretend that it was his place.

She had returned and there were "tons" of chickens to butcher. This was not his favorite part of the work. He dragged his feet and procrastinated. He decided he would become a vegetarian. He felt an affinity to the chickens.

Maybe Serene would go off on another adventure soon, he thought.
