(ORP) Juan's life as a Steward

Post by Juan »

Juan lives in a small house on the back side of Serene's fields.
It is a little tumbled down one room place.
Before he was hired as a steward, he worked odd field jobs or worked the mines.
He is fairly intelligent, very charismatic, and very honest. He has some loyalty to Serene. He is grateful to be working for her, but he feels he deserves better, and is not that loyal to her.

Juan cleans up the breakfast dishes, while smiling and thinking about the other day.
The other day Serene had been working the field picking broccoli. It is true he had worked a bit but mostly he had sat back and encouraged Serene to get more done. He wasn't sure how he managed to get such a sweet job. It was like she worked for him.

He liked it best when she did not butcher. When she butchered he had lots to do and learn. He mutters under his breath, "Clean, clean, clean #%$@$%!!! Why does the butcher shop have to be so clean!"

He shakes his head and looks for more pleasant thoughts. "Today, she is studying. Soo all I have to do is hire someone to do the field work and stay out of the way. That should be easy enough." He quietly talks to himself. He knows it is a bad habit to talk to himself, but it kept him sane all those days down in the mines.

He finishs straighten up. It doesn't take long as Serene cleans up after herself as she goes. So in truth be could look at it as cleaning up after him self.

He heads to the town square with some job forms. Hopefully people will quickly take the jobs and he can have a rest.

Juan was pleased. He had gotten both jobs filled. Now he could watch Othniel work a Corn Field and Devereaux work a Veggie. He wondered what he could do to motivate them to work harder. He didn't get paid enough to work much in the fields too. He would enjoy his room and board and small stipend. The trick was to do as little as possible but be seen as very valuable.
He fell asleep on the porch. He hoped when he woke that they would be good workers.

Juan's eyes danced with glee. He watch Othniel work a Corn Field and Devereaux work a Veggie. There were nice harvests. Devereaux had been persuaded to work extra hard. Serene had been pleased with the output and today he had off. He felt lucky. With Serene studying, and the fields just growing, it was vacation day for Juan. He had never had vacation days before this job.
He decides to use this day to clean and straighten up his house. He might even plant a field for himself in his yard. He would stay out of sight so he did not get roped into more work.

Juan was able to quickly get through his chores today. The fields were growing well and didn't need much work. He kept them in excellent condition using some oats he crushed so they wouldn't grow. Talking to himself quietly,"My place is shaping up nicely! It is great to be paid to fix up my house. Other than an upcoming duel for Serene, all she does is read books. I have to figure out how to read and write..
Juan had strung up a hammock between two trees by his place. He found some papers serene had written. They were old. He didn't think she would miss them. He went to the hammock to rest in and see if he could figure out how to read.

Juan had been so busy fixing up his own place that he had neglected to work hard and find someone to work Serene's field. He had three or was it four days to himself? Serene lost in her studies. This was the life. Doing what he wanted. His place was starting to look good. He had just gotten paid. The money was burning a hole in his pocket. He was certainly not going to spend it on food. He could get all the free food he wanted at Serene's house. That was part of his wages. This was his dilemma should he go gamble at 21 in the caravan or should he buy a weapon and learn to fight. He was already good at fist fighting. Or should he buy some stuff to fix up his house. It felt good to be able to make choices. No more being a slave down in the mine. He was grateful for his new life.
He headed off to town to see if he could find someone to work the field.

Juan's days blurred together. One day much like the rest. He had lots of free time. Oh it is true, he had to hire a worker now and then or improve a field with ground oats, but all in all he was free to do as he chose.

His house was taking shape nicely, he thought. Never in his life had he had so much leisure time. He could do whatever he wanted. Serene seemed to be happy with his work. This amazed him. He wondered what he did to please the gods.

Now he had to get up the nerve to ask someone to teach him to read. The university had not allowed him entrance as he could not read. He did not know the basics. He was smart enough to know that reading was the key to controlling his own destiny.

Serene had gone on a trip to Widu. Juan had the place to himself. He felt like a king in his castle.
He had succeeded in hiring for the fields. He had gotten good yields, sales had gone well, and he had bought a parchment and pencil.
When he had free time, he would do his best to copy words he saw on signs. He didn't always know what the signs said. He would try to get clues from watching others and where the signs were placed.

He thought about asking for a bonus. He saved almost every thing he earned. What little he did spend, he spent on fixing up his house. Juan was trying to stay out of the tavern and gambling halls. He had seen those that took that path did not do well in life. Though there seemed to be exceptions. Maybe it had to do with reading, and writing. Juan was deep in thought as he looked for someone to hire.

Serene arrived back home. She was happy and lost in her own thoughts. She forgot to pay Juan his weekly wages. She just did not have the money on her because she had been traveling and all her money was tied up in goods.

Juan was irritated that she came home and did not pay him directly. While she was traveling he had paid himself from the storage box. With her home, somehow he wanted the wages to come directly from her and right now! He deserved it! He wanted her to tell him what a great job he had done. He fumed as he prepped the butcher workshop to start cutting up meat again. It had been a while since he had learned more about butchering.

Serene went right to work butchering and teaching him about the process. After a while he muttered under his breath about being a slave. Serene heard some of it. She looked up from what she was doing and said, "Whoops! I forgot to thank you for taking care of things while I was gone! Thank you so much."

She washed her hands and looked over the receipts. "You have a knack for numbers, but you forget to write things down. We will have to work on that."

Juan looks ashen. He wonders if she will figure out that he doesn't know how to read or write well. He uses little pictures to keep track of his numbers.

Forgetting that she forgot to pay him, Serene gives him a bonus of 23 F.

Juan smiles for the first time since she got home.

Juan thinks, It is about time she paid me. Why do I have to do every thing. If I am lucky she will go off traveling again soon.

He fumes that she complains about his records. He does the best he can without being able to read. He is lucky he has a natural ability when it comes to numbers, and money. Most of his dealings are oral, so his reading is not as big of a hindrance. He gives silent thanks to his father for helping him learn how to count money. Though he could of done without the beatings when he got it wrong.

He thinks about asking her to help him with his reading, this would be a perfect time as she mentioned he needed to get better. Yet his pride kept him quiet, even though he really wanted to ask for help.
