An Early Morning Visit to The Caravan

Post by George »

George arrived in Cork at dawn with Calysta’s body still sideways across the horse. He had traveled all night. It was dangerous for sure, but George didn't think Calysta could make it if he had waited for night to pass. In fact, he wasn’t sure if she could even make it half way to Cork.

George checked Calysta again to see if she was still breathing then proceeded towards the caravan. George knew that he couldn’t reach the inner caravan where Calysta’s family resided, but he at least took her towards the outer caravan.

Stopping at the barrier, George called out, “Good Morrow!” He waited anxiously for someone to hurry up and come.

Serene was skipping away from the caravan when she heard a very strange shout. She headed towards the noise. She sees something she had never seen before. Serene is usually friendly to a fault. She frequently gets lectures on the dangers of talking to strangers.
She wonders at the strange sight. "What does good morrow mean?" She asks inquisitively. As she gets closer and realizes it is her sister, she starts screaming at the top of her lungs, "WWHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY SISTER!" without waiting for a response she starts screaming, "RIERON! SCARLET! CASSANDRA! GRAZILDA! TEIDE!" If marrow was good there was something wrong with this man. She didn't think her sister looked good at all!

Serene knows that the morning meal is in progress and they should not be far. Her soldiers that are assigned to follow her and keep her out of trouble, look aghast. "Go quick get a healer! If anything happens to her you are in trouble! Go go go! Rieron will understand your leaving me!" She sees the fear in their eyes as they are uncertain. "GO GO GO NOW!" Serene gives them her most ferocious glare. If they listen to her they will be violating a direct order from Rieron.

Serene turns her back on the soldiers just assuming they will listen. She draws her sword and points it at George. "WHAT IS YOUR NAME? And WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY SISTER!" Serene demands angrily! Trying to sound like she knows what marrow is to be more intimidating, "THIS MARROW ISN'T GOOD At All!" Serene shouts emphatically.

This act makes the soldiers hesitate as it looks like Serene might get in trouble. All the yelling unsettles the horse.

The child was certainly not who George had hoped would greet them, but better at least someone was there to receive Calysta. He was about to explain the situation rather than answer her question, when the child began screaming without warning.

George jumped from the aggravating assault on his ears. The sudden movement along with the shrill sound of the youngster’s voice spooked the horse. George struggled to regain control of the horse, but the noisy child wouldn’t quiet herself. The horse jerked the reins from his hands. George grasped at the reins again, but the horse was taking off and Calysta began slipping from the steed.

Ignoring the youngster, George lunged forward to catch Calysta as the horse escaped. George shifted Calysta so that he almost cradled her with his left arm underneath her shoulders. With his right hand, George held her head protectively.

George cursed his luck at having been greeted by this cacophonous youngster. He had never much liked children, which was why Calysta had never introduced him to this family member, which he gathered to be Serene from her wild, unkempt hair. George was glad Calysta had spared him introductions with the child sooner because he thought instantly he did not like her, for she was anything but what her name implied.

“Be ye Serene?” He asked to verify his hunch. “Calysta didst tell me that her sister Serene wouldst save her.” This was actually a lie, but George’s strategy would be to play nice with this younger sister of Calysta. If it worked, maybe she’d calm down, and he could actually get Calysta the help she needed. “If you be Serene, then perchance you will doest as Calysta said ye would and take her into the caravan for Rieron to heal her?”

George very much hoped that Serene would do as he suggested. He’d met the Druchii in passing and didn’t much want to meet him again under these circumstances. George preferred that Serene save him the trouble of dealing with the Druchii. That way he’d be relieved of dealing with both the Druchii and Serene. As a bonus, he’d have time to fetch the horse.

Serene had never been trained to handle a horse before so she didn't know the horse would act in such a peculiar way. Yes she had been around horses but she had never had a screaming bout in front of a horse before.

Serene was irritated that George was ignoring her questions, and he was paying attention to the horse instead of answering her questions. As the horse bolted and George caught Calysta, Serene lowered her sword and ran towards Calysta. "WHAT IS YOUR NAME? And How do you know my sister?" Serene's voice lowered as she got closer. She kept her self a swords length away so she could raise it quickly should the need arise.

Serene sensed by George's irritated quavering voice that something he was saying was an untruth. She was surprised he knew her name as she didn't recall meeting him before. The way he held Calysta though appeared to be a loving touch and he could of just let her fall.

Her 9 year old mind raced. Was this a moment to trust a stranger? Or should she listen to Rieron and not trust a stranger. He seemed insincere in his comments but he did want to give her, her beloved sister Calysta. She most definitely wanted her sister to be okay and not dead.

Serene purposely didn't validate any of his guesses. What if he was using Calysta as bait? What if he wanted to catch her also? What if more people were hiding in the woods? She looked around uncertain what to do. She really wanted to touch Calysta to see if she was really alive. A part of her was wishing she hadn't sent her escort away.

George thought to himself what crazy bunch of people would give a child a sword to swing around wildly. Fortunately, his words seemed to have some effect on the child - they just didn’t go far enough to stir her to action. The youngster still would not take Calysta, so he figured he must answer some questions first.

“I am Lady Calysta’s loyal servant George, and if she lives, she will vouch for me,” he explained with full candor.

George’s face betrayed the genuine concern he had for Calysta’s life as well as his own fate, which at the moment seemed to be entwined with hers. “I shall be very distraught should she pass away. I did travel through the night all the way to Cork just to bring her here, so that she might be saved.” George said all this earnestly before pressing once more.

“Pray, lass, come hither and take Lady Calysta into the Caravan,” he pleaded with her.

"Oh... You have to come too! I can't carry her that far. And Rieron will have to verify your story. I can get you in I think if you hold my hand and since you are carrying Calysta." Serene was hoping she wasn't making a horrible choice. Serene thought if her soldiers were diligent, and they were they should be arriving very soon. Serene was not exactly sure this would work for him to get through the shield. Even her steward Juan had never passed the shield. Serene decided she had to try... Her sisters life was in danger. Serene loved her sister and would love to carry her, there was a high likelihood she might drop her. Calysta was an adult and Serene was just nine. She was strong. She trained incessantly on the training field everyday, but she was a child still.
"Is she okay? She doesn't look very alive. Calysta, Calysta wake up okay?" Serene pleaded with her sister. The shield was still several hundred yards away. Serene realized the dilemma. If she was holding his hand he couldn't carry her. "I know I will hold your elbow as you seem to need your hands. The shield is a quarter mile that way." Serene pointed. Serene put her hand on George's elbow and gently started pulling him in the right direction. She didn't want to make him drop her.

**** Meanwhile ****

It seemed the lass wasn’t going to let George out of anything despite the fact that Calysta had told him that Serene was stronger than she was. Regardless, George picked up Calysta and took Serene by the hand. He was dreading having to deal with the Druchii and losing the horse.

Then luck happened. There was a pop and Calysta and Serene were beyond the shield. George watched Serene carry Calysta off and was relieved for both Calysta and himself.

George left in search for the horse. He thought it would take him a long while, but fortunately he found the rented horse quickly. That saved Calysta having to pay the cost of the horse, he thought to himself.

George was in the process of leading the horse back to town to rest when Serene’s guards appeared. “We have orders from Drachau Rieron to take you back to the Tavern,” the Guards said.

George frowned. “Well, dost thou have any news of Milady Calysta?” The Guards gave a negative, deepening George's frown. “Dost thou at least have stables for the horse to rest?” He followed up with another question. The Guards affirmed that they did, and George followed.

George procured some food and water for the horse at the stables of the outer caravan then went inside the tavern. All along he was followed closely by the Guards. It appeared that he was not so lucky after all.

George sat down at a table. At least he reckoned that Calysta would be recovered enough to vouch for him before he had to speak to the Druchii.
