Akos walked through the front door of the house. It was much larger than their previous one back home in - wait no, not home anymore - back in Bravia, but it wouldn't have been considered a mansion or anything akin to it, especially not in a realm where Zuan was king. She forcefully blew a strand of hair from her eyes and was ready to mumble something very unladylike beneath her breath about her new ‘Kings’ decorative proclivities, when suddenly the sound of what Akos assumed to be crashing glass shifted her attention away from her own musings. This was quickly followed by shouting and a sobbing stranger running past her and out the door.

Concern etched itself on her face as she hastily followed the harsh melody of shattering objects. Akos paused, leaning ever so slightly past the doorway, to the room Serendipity had assured her was, in all seriousness, called a ‘sitting room’ and winced as her wife let out a blood curdling shriek of rage. Akos waited for a vase to go hurtling past her head before making herself quietly known, Aishe?

She waited patiently for the beautiful blonde to settle enough to ensure it was safe for Akos to enter the room, then stepped softly over the threshold. Anyone with eyes could see that her wife had been stressed since arriving in Fenia, but her current behaviour seemed more than a touch excessive, especially considering what they had endured together, and separately, in the past. Even when they were being hunted, Aishe had rarely lost herself to her emotions so violently, so it made no sense that her reactions now were based simply upon the stress of being Viceroy in a strange land. Akos had known something more was up when Aishe all but ripped Draven’s throat out during an argument a few days ago; it was clearly time to get to the bottom of what was going on.

Aishe, Akos crossed the distance between herself and her wife, What’s going on?

Aishe sat, brows furrowed and bright eyes focused. The woman before her was a fortune teller, who Aishe had asked to come visit her for a reading. Aishe had grown up surrounded by women in touch with foresight, as was the Sanchari gift, as well as different types of readings her culture was renown for. She had been taught of these many ways since she was a child, yet in times of stress, it was an odd sense of comfort to seek out another to see what they have to say - as she often felt stress interfered with readings. So there they sat, curtains drawn and anticipation hanging in the air as the woman turned over Aishe's hand again and again. Impatience was beginning to grow, until the teller finally spoke.

There is yet time enough for you to take a different path.

Aishe stared at her for a long moment, an eyebrow slowly rising. The impatience in her expression was shifting to annoyance, hinting at a rare temper. Her hand was withdrawn from the teller's, lips pursed in dislike of the words given.

A different path? A harsh scoff was given while she rose to her feet, increasing anger beginning to fill her following words. You have no idea what I have given up to be on this path. This is the only path. How dare you presume to tell me otherwise? It's too late!

She was in a full fury now, retreating away from the woman who stammered for words. It was not the teller's fault, not really. It was all the stress built up inside the vampire that had her so unstable. Stress was a dangerous thing, even more so for someone who traditionally had heightened emotions. The typically level-headed woman was unhinged and falling to bits as she lashed out, grabbing the first thing her hands could find and hurling it with a yell. The glass shattered, meeting the frightened sob of the teller.

She paid little mind to the escaping woman, carrying on in her own distress in full gear. Things flew through the air with a range of noises from the thrower. What did the woman know? She knew nothing! One could not just easily hop the path they committed to and find another. The world did not work that way. She had no choice but to keep moving forward and she intended to. If anything good came from the reading, it was the sudden reserve she had to keeping to her path.

The soft, worried voice of her wife drew her attention away from her next victim. Inhaling sharply, her hand withdrew from the teacup she was close to picking up, while she turned to the door. Sure enough, there stood Akos, but only for a moment before she neared closer. Aishe shook her head roughly, looking away when her wife attempted to inquire. Grumbling, she took a few steps back and ran her fingers through her long locks. The flared temper was already fading, but now her eyes were growing misty. Crimson tears brimmed her eyes while she struggled to find the words she wanted, before eventually coming to threw herself onto Akos with a shaky sob. Crying into her wife's neck, she began to mumble an apology for her behavior.

The cries were met with a comforting hug, which calmed her enough to pull away. The tears streamed, but she took Akos's hand and led her to the couch, sitting down. It was time her wife realized the path they were on, even if it terrified Aishe to show her their reality. Through sniffles and sobs, she explained every bit she could think of to the raven-haired woman, struggling to keep her emotions under control as her wavering voice and continued tears plainly showed. While her emotions were on full display, her wife's were far more subtle. Pain flashed across her dark eyes, but that pain was quick to turn into a silent rage. To match the rage, tears were beginning to well - which was an extremely rare sight and was a stake in Aishe's heart. Her words came to fall off to another sob, having said all she knew and unable to add anything of worth. Instead, all she could manage was --

Akos, you're dying.

Akos frowned and wrapped her wife tightly within her arms, hoping that her presence would be enough to sooth the trembling vampire. It worried her to know that she was right, that there was clearly more going on than any of them had realised. She allowed herself to be lead quietly to the couch.

Nothing good ever came out of being seated before a conversation and Akos found herself giving Aishe's hand a squeeze in reassurance. It was a trick she'd used in the past, another one that usually contributed to easing her wife's worries, yet the blood red tears continued to flow. Akos tried to ignore the way her mouth seemed to dry out more and more as each second passed slowly by. A nervous swallow filled the seemingly cavernous silence of the room before Aishe managed to find her voice through her grief.

It took a moment initially, to work out exactly what her wife was talking about. Akos focused intently on the broken and stumbled explanation of Aishe's desperate search for answers. She had been hunting for a cure, a way to eliminate the evil lurking within Akos that threatened to consume everything within its path. Zachrin's gift to the couple was temporary at best, and without an estimate of the spell's longevity Aishe had taken it upon herself to find a solution anywhere and anyway she could. It took but a moment longer for Akos to understand why Aishe's discovery caused her so much distress instead of joy.

Akos stared blankly into her wife's eyes as she spoke, too shocked to do anything else. She felt her insides collapse, falling in upon themselves over and over again until the incessant pain morphed into something grotesque and unfathomable in her core. Her wife and her shaking, terrified words fell away from Akos' focus as hot tears seared a slow path down her cheeks. After all they had been through, all they had fought against - not only in this life but also in their others - it had never once occurred to her to expect this depth of betrayal. Akos' hand went slowly limp within Aishe's grasp, the deafening wall of noise caused by the blood pumping through her veins made it impossible to concentrate on her wife's increasingly desperate words. Words that meant little to her now.

And yet, it was still her wife's words that finally broke through to her mind and snapped her out of her stupor. Nausea threatened to overwhelm her as she ripped her hand, as if burned, from Aishe's hold. Akos stood abruptly, taking a measured step backwards as the nausea turned to fury. Her body quivered beneath the force of it, it twisted and turned maddeningly, simmering to the surface only to be pushed back down by a wave of anguish.

Her lower lip quivered violently as she battled to contain the violent turmoil within. I'm going to die am I Aishe? Akos began, unable to control the emotions as the forced their way to the surface. It doesn't really matter now does it, she breathed out softly, bringing her eyes to meet those of the woman she called wife, I'm already dead.

The words reached her ears far quicker than it took for her numbed mind to process. Aishe looked up, blue eyes wide and hands trembling. The words were clearly uttered in anger, and most words said in anger were not meant, but... She was not so sure, looking up at her other half. It became impossible to breathe, her chest laying still to the mundane task she did not need.

Roughly, she pushed herself off the couch and moved forward to grab her wife, but Akos took a counter-step back. The space between them was closed swiftly when Aishe 'cheated', as Akos often called it, and used both her strength and speed to reach out and grab both of Akos's arms to hold her firmly in place. Looking at her dead on, her heartbroken features combined with a rigidness not often spotted on her cheery demeanor.

When I died, Akos, you had me turned into a monster to bring me back. YOU are the reason I am this way, but I never once resented you for it. You did what you had to to keep me by your side, damned the consequences.

The vampire released her with a scowl. Temper was back, but it was mostly aimed at herself and not her wife's reasonable reaction. She choked back another sob though, the coldness giving way to her burdened heart.

I did the same. Time and again, we have proven we will do whatever it takes to keep each other safe. And this time, it's not just about you and me... It's about the children. It's our job to protect them from harm and that's exactly what I am doing.

You can hate me for it, but I will not raise them without you. I refuse to sit by on the sidelines and watch you die, or worse, succumb to the evil within you, when I can do something about it! It's that simple.

Akos would have gasped at the audacity if she'd had the time. Aishe always did tend to forget her strength when she was particularly emotional, so what should have been nothing more than a simple release from her hold turned into Akos stumbling backwards a good half dozen steps and into a wall. Using said wall as leverage, Akos pushed herself forward and stomped her way closer to Aishe, gesturing wildly as she went, You're blaming ME?! she spat vehemently. How about the guy who MURDERED you Aishe? But nooooo...it's my fault you're a monster!?

Akos could feel the blood rushing to her head, could feel the flush of heat on her cheeks as her body temperature rose in correlation to her fury. The pain was still there, sitting still and silent within her soul, but it was the anger that was talking now and it would not recede until it has been heard. Akos stepped forward again, forcing her way into Aishe's personal space as her eyes ever so slowly started to swirl to a midnight black. She gave her wife a firm shove with the palms of her hands before stepping even closer, pressing their bodies together. Did you not stop to think wife, she husked out, her voice becoming deeper, rougher with each word, that this might be the very thing that pushed me over the edge? Akos leaned forward, running her nose along Aishe's collarbone while inhaling deeply, Who's turning who into a monster now.

Akos laughed maniacally as her body cracked the plaster of the wall, Aishe’s hands having hoisted her into the air and back once again. Mages you're predictable she declared, smile gleaming brightly. She picked herself up and dusted off her clothes, eyes focused intently on the woman before her. They circled each other slowly, not once noticing the two pairs of bright blue eyes peeking around the corner, nor the intensity with which they were being watched.

It would be simple for Akos to merely drain the 'life' once and for all from her vampire lover’s body, but that just seemed too simple. Akos wanted to feel the woman's life force ebb away, piece by piece, wanted the thrill that only physical contact could provide. Impatient for the experience and uncaring for the vampire’s speed and strength, Akos lunged at Aishe, their hands wrapping around each others’ throats as the air around them crackled to life with a resounding pop.

The landing was much better this time. It took a little bit of effort, but Aishe remained upright as she returned to her rightful realm, hand entwined with Akos's. A giant grin split across her lips, blue eyes barely registering the familiar room before she began yelling.

WE'RE BACK!! Tugging Akos along, Aishe sprung forward excitedly, calling out at the top of her lungs. She was far too impatient to wait for them to come to her, however. Wife in tow, she bounded out of the sitting room, letting the hall carry her voice even further. IT'S OKAY! WE ARE FINALLY HOME! WE ARE OKAY!

Thunderous, rushed footsteps approached from different parts of the house, but both Serendipity and Sokanon appeared about the same moment, seemingly alarmed by the commotion. Aishe squealed, letting go of Akos's hand, while she pulled both women into a tight hug. She didn't note their confused expressions or sounds, far too consumed by the pure joy she felt in being home. It was hard not to squeeze too tightly as she clung to them, not releasing them from the hug as she began to chatter away.

MAGES! I've missed you both so much!! To see your faces again, after all this time, is a wondrous thing.

Finally, she pulled back, but not before she gave them both an obnoxious kiss on the cheek. Grinning ear to ear, she stepped back to let Akos hug them, rolling to and fro on her feet in a continued display of excitement while she admired her sister-in-law.

My! It's been thirteen years and you haven't aged a day, Soka!

It felt like an age since she had been home, but in reality it had only been a few nights. Maybe a week. Or was it two?

Akos had lost track of how long she'd been sleeping at the office, putting all her time into making sure the mines weren't going to collapse due to all of the critter attacks and general incidents that had been occurring. The effort of keeping everything up and running was exhausting, and the stress was manifesting itself in weird way.

The dreams were vivid and detailed and disconcerting. The first one she'd had not long after Zuan had saved her from the darkness and she'd thought nothing off it, but now... now the dreams were incessant. Plaguing her during what little sleep she could manage and solidifying themselves into her brain. They had followed her into her waking life, little shards of information that lingered and grew, becoming more detailed during the few quiet moments she got to herself. In truth, Akos could no longer discern whether they were just dreams or something more, something more like memories.

Akos poured herself a fire brandy and slumped into an arm chair. She'd finally given in to the impulse to investigate and had left her office earlier that morning to do just that. It had taken her all day, but she'd followed the clues in her dreams and actually located the prize. She took a large mouthful of the drink then exhaled slowly. Mages help her, they weren't dreams at all. They were memories.

Thaspo'ordere: Mothers of the Vale

Post by Serendipity »

The sun rose into the sky late, as it did this time of year, yet Serendipity kept to an early rise. She enjoyed the quiet, dark morning by herself while the rest of Thaspo’ordere house lay silent. Even when the sun did come up over the city, the haze of falling snow kept the light minimal and amplified the silence despite the stirring of creatures.

She spent the morning doing her usual “getting ready for the day” routines. She meditated shortly after her slippered feet hit the cold floor, letting the fireplace remain in faint embers with the chill on her neck. It was a relaxing way to wake, she thought. The cold got her moving, her mind running, her blood pumping. It provided more focus on her breath and her heartbeat, giving her the serenity needed to tap into the energy around her.

Following her morning meditations, she began some basic exercising, having yet to leave her bedroom. She started with stretches, moving into interesting positions she had learned from elves a long time ago meant to really push her muscles to be limber and ready. With her body stretched, she proceeded to draw her sword and practice her footwork and swings, both offensive and defensive. It had been a while since she had to use her sword in anything real, but she would not allow herself to let the peacetime cause rust. Peace did not last forever.

By sunrise, she could be found nestled in the front sitting room with a warm cup of klahua and a half eaten apple. Between her chair and the empty one, a bowl of oatmeal sat cooling for the other redhead in the household. It was topped with sugar and apple slices, as it had so often been done over the centuries. The house was beginning to stir with quiet shuffles on the second story.

A thin brow arched upwards at the sight of the raven haired twins scurrying past the sitting room with purpose, but she remained seated. Luckily for the palace staff, the boys preferred to stay in Imperius at Thaspo'ordere, which continued to serve as a roof for the Boreens Durri. While she had once had to keep a very close eye on them, Aian and Aeton were old enough to understand the lines of what they should and should not do. They were still mischievous at eighteen, but they were less... Chaotic in many ways. Besides, this morning her focus was on her own child, patiently waiting for Zipporah to rise for the day.

In the weeks that followed the end of a chapter in her life, Zipporah had turned to her mother, as she had done her entire life. The days of late had been quietly spent, the healing was taking time and the physical toll was becoming evident.

She slowly woke for the day, laying in her bed for a few minutes letting the sounds of the household reach her ears. it was always interesting listening to things begin to wake. As she rose she spent a few minutes brushing through her hair, trying to tame the flaming locks. Satisfied enough with the results she wandered trying to find something to wear. After a few tries she settled on a dress that was flowing and floor length, a stark departure from her usual garments.

Finding the energy to do anything beyond the minimal self care was impossible this morning, as it had been lately. Sighing at her own melancholy she left her room making her way to where she knew her mother would be waiting for her. She approached the table and smiled at her mother, before eying the bowl sitting on the table. Taking a breath she sat, "Good morning"
