[CRP] An Heir to a Kingdom

Post by Aishe »

:: February 26th, 1659 | The Ettinford Estate ::

Lips remained slightly pursed as the teacup was lowered with a slight tremble. The tea was soothing and even more soothing was her best friend sat across from her. Cathrina's presence helped with the Queen's nerves as the week dragged on. She had little energy these days to find her own entertainment, keeping to her room to reserve the energy she did have. It was up on the second floor, in her chambers, that the pair sat conversing in the small sitting nook connected to the bedroom. The curtains were drawn back on the windows, but the landscape was difficult to see. A storm had hit that morning, covering the afternoon sun and the Ettinford grounds. A swirl of white and grey raged against the warped glass, an echoing silence laid over the world disturbed only by the howl of wind.

You know, unlike my husband, I was born in the heat of summer. My mother always swore it was the hottest day of the year, but the labour was swift and it was all worth it because I was perfectly healthy... Despite being born a bit early.

Her words trailed as her gaze dropped down to the melon under her dress.

You, little one, are an entirely different story, aren't you?

There was a kick, as if it was a direct response from the spirited unborn child. Her hand rubbed at her stomach gingerly. It'd be soon; they all knew it just by her size, but she really knew it. The babe had dropped and the wait had truly begun. This was Aishe's third pregnancy, which meant it was familiar territory - and yet, so much of this pregnancy was unfamiliar. Meira was born when she was still human and Aileigh Mae was in that short period of time her body was transitioning from human to vampire. Never before had her fully vampiric body carried a child. The lengths she and her body had had to go to successfully carry the King's heir left her in pitiful shape. The first two months were not bad, but going into the last month of the pregnancy proved to be more draining than she imagined. Now at full term, she was frail and sickly pale (even for her) with dark shadows under her eyes: a shell of a queen, but there was still strength and determination in her bright eyes.

It would be to no one's surprise that in less than an hour from that moment, the Queen would go into labour. The only surprise to be had, perhaps, would be the dreadful length of the situation, ongoing until the early morning hours of the twenty seventh. With the first rays of unseen sun, in the middle of a raging storm, a prince would be born. The Kingdom of Fenia finally had an heir; the High King had a son. It would be a son that he would be unable to meet for two weeks per the strict cultural laws of his wives, but a son that was born healthy with a head of fair locks and vibrant eyes.

The moment the wailing babe was in his mother's arm, Aishe held him close. Not just to provide warmth and comfort from the scary world he had just entered, but to provide the greatest protection a mother could give their child in Romani culture. A name, only known to her, was whispered into his ear, the cries easily covering the utterance. It would be his shield in life against the spirits and other evils of the world. Never would a spirit be able to overcome him, for they would never know his secret name. One name of three in total, this was his true name. It was a name never to be spoken or written again, a name she chose in the moment that felt perfect.

His true name was just the start of a life full of interesting traditions. For the following two weeks, the rules would be extraordinarily strict because both the prince and his mother were at high risk against the unseen. The few remaining male guards and staff left around Ettinford had been officially swapped out for female. For the next two weeks, the pair could only be cared for and protected by other women. No man, including the King, could be in their presence.

No name would be used in this period; only after being in this world for fourteen days would the Fenian prince be named. Until that time, he'd only be referred to as things like "little prince", or by his mothers "little wolf".

While the babe was what appeared to be an incredibly healthy, human baby, Aishe was a different story. Recovery - now that was something else entirely.

The two weeks of isolation was a blessing in disguise, she'd later recall. The first several days were a blur; there was a lot of in and out of consciousness. Her body was doing a dramatic shift from semi-living creature supporting another level of life. For days, her skin was so pale, it was nearly transparent. Veins could be seen from the lack of colour, giving the only illusion to life while she lay still. When conscious, all of her attention went to her newborn son or life-sustaining sustenance. There was peace in her unrest knowing that Akos was around, along with most of her female family. Not only did it mean she was safe, but that her little wolf was safe in a time that she could not protect him. He was quite possibly the safest babe in all the lands, nestled between vampires, necromancers, and other assorted immortals.

As the phases of consciousness grew in duration, she was awake long enough to fully realize those missing. Othniel. Rannek. Kyler and Riordan. But, most importantly, the King. There was communication with the help Akos, but at the time, feeling his touch would have been better than just his words. She was an immortal creature though - what was another week of separation?

The second week began with cuddles and low light. The light hurt her eyes, the sun hurt her skin; yet as the week trailed on, so did her recovery. Her skin regained "colour", or at least the amount of colour her kind had. Half way through, she was out of bed and on her feet again. It was from there that she recovered swiftly, as if her healing had finally kicked in again. The pressing changes of her body were affected by the acceleration, though even as the fortnight came to an end, she was still not back to her full strength.

It was with great anticipation that she sat at the literal edge of her seat, waiting for midnight to come. Her little wolf was nestled into her arms, bundled to fight off any winter chill that found them in the cozy bedchamber. Normally, the mother and newborn would stay in the birthing tent (or in this case, the private chambers of her estate) until sunrise following the fourteenth day. With sunrise, the restless spirits take a break from wrecking havoc in their world and it is safe to proceed directly to the location of the baptism. However, given their travel was through a type of teleportation, they were going to move at midnight following the fourteenth day, into the safety of a space prepared for this moment. They would have a few hours before sunrise for a reunion and introduction, before the prince was shown before the public and he got his names.

Akos seemed just as impatient for the time to come. So, when midnight finally arrived, there the biggest grin split across her face as the raven haired woman gave her fingers the slightest, unnecessary flick. Shadows enveloped the three of them and her bedroom of Ettinford vanished.

In its place, a different, but equally familiar room came into view. It was a sitting area of the royal palace, a very specific one. It was a connected living space between the traditionally separate bedchambers. The first thing to hit her were the smells, which brought an ease to her. Any tense muscles relaxed, a soft smile finding her lips. She was home... A place she never thought she would call home.

It had been a long few weeks, most notably for the silence, which amusingly enough, was one thing he had perhaps craved during the final weeks of Aishe’s pregnancy, given there had been preparation and planning, and some complaining (Not that he’d ever mention that to her mind). However now, after weeks of silence, excluding a few updates Akos had provided in regards to the health of both mother and child, he was looking forward to seeing Aishe and the newborn boy she had brought into this world. Perhaps it was ironic, that she had claimed to be the one going into isolation, yet it had been he, who had been so isolated in these weeks. And so he waited, and waited, dealing with the daily issues of court and council, managing without his wife and Viceroy, motivated at those times of complete boredom by the fact the following day he would be reunited with his family.

He waited in the Royal Chambers, which in of themselves had been expanded over the past week, sorcery did have it’s blessings after all, and thus the Queen’s chambers and apartments had been expanded to include space for the new inclusion to the family. The cradle had been carved from oak and befitted with small carved wolves into the wood, some of his courtiers had recommended something more lavish for a Royal Prince, but as he had told them, he would be spoilt enough by his mothers, and it was better for ones head to rest upon a simple sheet surrounded by wolves than it was to be wrapped in silk and locked in a gilded cage. Simplicity was key, as strength came from the individual not from what they were surrounded by.

Time slowly passed, or least it felt as if it had slowed. All he wished for now was for their arrival and so as midnight approached he sat softly in a highback chair, tapping his fingers against the arm and looking down into the gaze of the fire within the hearth. He was wearing black breeches, along with black leather boots and a white silk shirt, there was no need for formality or glamour at this hour or even for this event. This was, despite the nature of the child and of himself, not a royal event, or a Kingdom one. It was an event between father and child, and family – nothing more or less. He closed his eyes, and in that silence he heard a noise, nothing loud or obnoxious, but the smallest, faintest change. He listened again, steps, movement out of nowhere, which meant – well it meant for one, he had likely fallen asleep in the chair, and secondly that midnight had passed, and with it, his family had returned.

Carefully and calmly he walks out of the small study and into the main room, where he noticed Aishe and Akos, facing in the opposite direction. Softly he muttered. ”Welcome Home.” Offering them both a smirk in the process.

His voice was the first thing she heard. The rustle he must have made standing from the chair had been overwhelmed by all the familiar scents, but his voice... It cut through everything like Damascus steel through silk. She spun around, braid whipping over her shoulder. As her eyes landed on him, everything else melted away. Her heart would have skipped a beat if it still had rhythm. While her heart was still, her feet were not as she moved forward. For a human, it was a hastened pace, but for her, it was abnormally slow given the relief and excitement she felt -- yet, she did not wish to startle the newborn tucked in her arms.

Still conscious of the babe, Aishe immediately buried her face into his chest for a hug. She inhaled deeply, relishing his scent and touch for that moment while words were left in her throat. She knew she had missed him, but it was not until that moment that she realized how badly she had missed him. Crimson tears had begun to prick her eyes by the time she pulled away, be it from the hormones or the fact she was simply an emotional person. With a sniffle, she let out a laugh and rolled her eyes.

I said I wasn't going to cry.

Come on, we both knew you would.

Akos's chuckle was met with a sheepish look. Aishe cleared her throat and put a little bit more space between her and Zuan for a single purpose: to show him his son. She took a hand to brush the furs back, gaze lingering on the little round face. All the movement had him waking up with an uncoordinated stretch of his arms. Being nestled in the thick fur, he wore no hat, so his fair hair was on display. It was difficult to see due to the paleness of the locks and the lack of, but it was there. She watched him yawn, eyes still yet to open, before her gaze drifted up to her husband, willing to hand the sweet bundle over.

Meet your son... The Prince of Fenia.

He carefully wrapped his arms around Aishe as she moved toward him and pressed her face into his chest, however he made sure not to put too much pressure on her and thus on the still sleeping babe in her arms, while no words came across he could feel every emotion and feeling she had no doubt had bundled up these past weeks ebb away as he held her close, his eyes trailed down and looked at the top of her head for a moment as she was still very much buried in his chest, until finally she leaned back away so they could make eye contact – he quickly noted the tears, which in herself manifested as blood, leading to his eyes tilting down to his own silk shirt, which did indeed now have ‘tear marks’ upon it. Tilting his head back up to her, with his usual smirk he muttered softly. ”Clearly I will need a new shirt.” He joked, as he noted Akos’ reaction, and quickly passed an equal smirk in her direction also.

His eyes however tilted downward as Aishe motioned with her own hands toward the son who was heavily wrapped up in furs, which was understandable given that despite it being the end of winter traditionally, the snows and storms were still strong outside and causing chaos – thankfully due to Akos roads were not a travel requirement, else it might have been another week before he finally got to meet his son. He noted the fairness of his young sons locks, and then the gentle motions of the little ones hands, ever so slightly disturbed by the sudden lack of soft furs to reside and sleep within, and then with a blink or two, his son finally opened his eyes and gazed upward upon his father and into the castle and the world that one day he would likely have to embrace as his own. His sons eyes were identical to his own, almost too identical, but yet as he stared down he felt no fear or concern, simply pride in his wife and his new-born and the family which had protected them when he could not.

Carefully he took the bundle into his arms, and held him close, lifting him and holding him in such a way that he had never held anything else in the world. Here it was, after six long years of ruling these lands, of fighting wars and rebellions, building alliances and cities, it was here and only here he finally found a true sense of victory, for in his arms was the future and all the good and terrifying things which came with that unknown. Yet as he looked down into his own eyes, he knew the common truth, so long as he stood and breathed and could fight, that future would be bright, not easy and certainly not simple, but between the four of them, there could be little doubt in his mind that one day, the son in his arms, would ascend to the throne he currently held and guide the Kingdom into a new dawn that not even he could possibly imagine.

Perhaps it had only been seconds, maybe minutes, even hours he stood there in that silence looking down into the eyes of his son, before finally turning back to Akos and Aishe, a smile upon his lips, as the son in his arms slowly drifted back to a much welcome sleep in the warmth of this new and confusing world.
”I love you all. Unconditionally.” He said in a whisper. ”This is my life and my world, outside of those doors I am a King and a ruler of the largest known realm, battle-hardened warrior, to some a friend, to some a leader, to some the demon that strolls upon their earth, but none of that matters – all that matters from this day forth is what is in this room, who is in this room and what we all mean. Not just to eachother, but to the realm as a whole – even this little wolf here, who rests in my arms, we are a symbol and from this day, from his first breath, there are those who would seek to extinguish that flame. But to each of them…they must know, to do that, they must go through me.” His words, as ever to his wives, were blunt and honest, he would never lie to them, never, especially when it came to their roles and his own as more than husband and wives, but as King and Queens. It was necessary for them all to know that harsh truth, harsher than the winds that struck against the glass windows of the castle, that there at this moment would be individuals seeking their demise and that their son, unknowing of it all, would be the first target. ”With that being said dear wives, I do not believe he can simply be called ‘Prince of Fenia’ forever, he might be better with a name, else it might go to his head you know?” He joked with them, a smirk cracking upon his face, a joke to break the tension, as he carefully walked back to the boys mother and offered him back to her, noting that after his words, she might be wishing to hold him that bit tighter.

It was a spectacle to watch. Or at least, in her eyes. Her smile was somehow both soft, yet large, as she took a step back to watch their husband and their newest child. Her arm wrapped around Akos's waist, leaning into her with a happy sigh. There was something so pure in moments like these: a father meeting his son. Even if she were to live for thousands of years, this night would forever be seared into her memory and the joy she felt in that moment would re-spark with the recollection.

Her affectionate gaze shifted to her wife, squeezing slightly. She loved them. Both of them. It was something she never thought would be possible. Akos was her soulmate and for so many lives now, it had just been the two of them. Again and again, it was the same song and dance. It baffled her that not only had they found someone not intimidated by their history, but the sheer fact that their hearts were big enough to love another. Of course, the marriage had not been born out of love, but love still found a way to flourish. She knew this unusual marriage of unusual circumstance got much speculation. However, in a moment as pure as this, the outside world meant nothing. The whispers, the stares, it meant nothing. It was the three of them and their family, and that was all that mattered.

Piercing blue eyes went back to the father and son. His words brought on another wave of tears while Aishe tried to stifle a sniff. She had been so determined not to shed a tear, if just to prove to Akos she wasn't such an emotional mess. Curse the woman for being right about everything; that was her job! Determined to get her tears under control, she straightened up and wiped at her cheeks. The joke got a snort-turned-laughed from the blonde, giving her the distraction needed to stop the streak of crimson. It was difficult to resist taking her son back, but she looked up to Zuan with a smile.

We have had two weeks to hold him. It's your turn. Despite her words, however, she did take advantage of the moment to press a light kiss to the top of the babe's head. I know he is going to face a lot in his life, but I am not worried. He will be strong because he is loved and he will be protected because you are loved. And some day, he will be a great and just King... Just like his father.

Aishe paused, looking between her husband and newborn.

I would like to point out that whoever "they" are, definitely has to also get through both of us. I may "just be a vampire", but our wife is becoming brilliant with her necromancy. A wide grin split across her lips, glancing at Akos with a hint of pride. Oh, how the tables had turned from a few years ago. She went on to remind him, even though she understood the sentiment of his statement. Or perhaps, she was trying to remind herself because she understood the amount of danger that loomed out there, waiting to strike. And not to mention the rest of our family and close friends. This child will be the most safe babe to have ever walked this world. "They" can come, but he will always be safe.

Again, she paused, letting her words settle before giving a soft smile.

As for his name, well... You'll find out when the sun rises. Because as his mother, it is my duty to do everything in my power to protect him. She pulled away from Akos to leave a kiss upon their husband's cheek, a tease chasing away the seriousness of her words. Even from impatient kings.

Grinning, she stepped away and retreated to a couch, where she sat with a comfortable sigh. She pulled her feet up under her and reached towards the table to pour herself some wine. And we have a few hours until sunrise. Until then, rom, you will just have to entertain us.
