[IRP] An Autumn Stroll and...

Post by Thea »

Spring turned to Summer. Summer turned to Autumn. Thea found herself increasingly bored and isolated. Her insolence and her broody behavior had resulted in more and more harsh restrictions being placed upon her. She was never allowed to just be alone and she was very rarely allowed to socialize outside of formally prescribed functions. Throughout the week, her days were littered with lessons and family dinners and appointments. Her time was no longer her own and it frustrated her. But that was the point, wasn't it? To restrict her, conform her, make her into a proper Lady who was worthy of being a member of the royal family.

The days were growing shorter, and the nights longer. Thea stared out the window, paying no attention to the book propped open in her lap. Outside she could see the autumnal trees swaying in a light breeze. Leaves were beginning to drop, decorating the ground with vibrant shades of yellow, red, and orange. She wanted to go outside, and not for a stupid lesson or supervised walk. Achieving this would be an arduous task in and of itself. In the months since her arrival at Fenian Royal Court, Thea had found it progressively more difficult to escape the watchful eyes of servants and guards. They were starting to learn her tricks. The girl could slip out of her rooms through the servants' passageway. If she timed it right, she could easily escape out of the castle. But she could not entirely predict when servants might be using those back corridors. She had been caught trying to abscond through the narrow halls before because of bad timing.

Thea looked at the window again then down towards the ground outside. Perhaps... Pale-blue eyes assessed the situation, judging the distance to the ground. It was too far to just jump out of the window without breaking an important body part. Maybe, she thought to herself, she could fashion a rope out of sheets. Then she could use her makeshift rope to scale down the side of the building. There were some bushes below her window. She would have to try to avoid them. A pointy twig from one of those bushes could be hazardous if it lodged itself in her flesh. Though it would certainly get her trouble later when they figured out what she had done, this plan could work. She could already imagine the reaction of the King when he found out what she had done, but in this moment, Thea did not care about the consequences. The unruly girl just wanted to get out.

She turned back to face the room. No servants in sight. Her guard was stationed in the corridor outside of the main entrance to her apartments. The brute woman could come in at any time to check on Thea. The escape would require swiftness and caution. The Winterbourne girl set the book aside on a table and exited the study, quietly making her way to her bedchamber. Each step light as she padded through the rooms. Any sudden or loud sounds might cause alarm and prompt the guard to investigate. Once in her bedchamber, she gently closed the door behind her. Hastily, she stripped the bedding from the mattress and then separated the sheets from the top layer fur blanket. Thea replaced the top blanket back on the bed before returning her attention to the sheets. She picked them up in her hands and began to make knots every six inches. When she reached the end of the first sheet she tied it to the second sheet and repeated the pattern of knots. Finally finished tying the knots, she looked at her work. The two sheets were tied together securely and sort of resembled a rope. It should do the job. With her makeshift rope in hand, Thea went over to the window to look for a place to secure the sheet. There was a candle sconce on the wall by the window. She tied the sheet to the metal and tugged against it with the full force of her body to make sure that the candle holder did not fly off the wall. Satisfied that her anchor would hold, she went over to the window ledge. There was a moment of hesitation as Thea considered the potential drop if she lost her grip. She took a deep breath in to steady herself, then let the air back out again. She was ready. No, wait. She needed a cloak. Turning back into the room, she grabbed a cloak lined with fur from her wardrobe and then returned to the window. The girl sat down on the windowsill with her legs dangling outside. In both hands she held the sheet-rope tightly and began to make her way down the rope and down the wall outside the castle. Slowly she inched her way to the ground. She had made it halfway down when she felt the rope slipping. The knot that held the two sheets together was loosening and pulling apart. Thea was going to fall. She quickened her pace, trying to get down to the ground before the knot gave out completely. Three-quarters of the way there, the knot broke and the sheets ripped apart under her weight. A second later, she landed with a thud in one of the bushes.
