Elisa's cottage (IRP)

Post by Elisa »

Ooc; this thread is a place where I might store some events that happened in Elisa’s life.
This post will contain the first days after she arrived in Widu. Writing might depend on my busyness and inspiration. I’ll not be able to write about everything that happens, so my apologies if a storyline isn’t included, it’s not because I value the story line any less.
This tread might also be used for rp with others who want to visit at the house, if you do please contact me before posting here.

Elisa hadn’t planned on leaving her home, rather she had gotten lost. As a consequence she was left with nothing but the clothes she was wearing. They were very dull and basic clothes: a underdress and simple dress made from cheap fabric which was rough and itching to the skin. Under which she had a pair of simple thin leather shoes. Luckily she was found rather soon, without his help she would have probably not survived long. They had travelled together for a while, working odd jobs to earn some money or get a bed and a meal for the night. The man had showed kindness to her, which she hadn’t expected to come from a complete stranger. He had been a first step for her to be more open and less shy to other people.

As winter was approaching and the weather became colder she had used all the money she had managed to save up to buy an old cloak of somebody who didn’t really want It anymore. It was a simple brown cloak but it helped protect her from the elements. This purchase however meant that she arrived in a town called Widu, again with nothing but the clothes on her back, and a little bit of food this time. Now it was time to get her own way.

She had soon discovered a lovely tavern called the Mysts. She liked to spend her time here during the day, when she was not working or looking for work. At first she had just went there to get out of the cold and try to warm up a bit. Later she got to know some people and also went in in hopes to see her new friends as well. She however could not afford to buy a room at the tavern which met that she was back in the cold for the nights.

She had always been poor, but now she had hit the bottom. She managed to find work and get some food; some bread or corn pudding. Though just enough to get her fed, not enough to actually be full for a whole day. She still was hungry quite often. But the cold might even have been worse. Winter had fully set in and it was snowing almost all the time. Her clothes were not made for this; thin and worn. To make matters worse she had no place to stay. The first few nights she had curled up against a wall or under a bridge, trying to find at least a little bit of shelter. She didn’t sleep much these nights. She had been taught to not complain and not to ask questions and she didn’t want to bother others with her troubles. Therefore she didn’t talk about her difficulties with other people when she was in the tavern. She had found the people she met there to be surprisingly friendly though. Without knowing they helped her greatly. Often they would bring snacks with them and let her have some or bought a round of drinks, including her. One person in particular, Cruella, often brought in pies and always let her have a piece. She had even made her a meat dinner once, and probably had been unaware of how much this meant for her.

Even more she had been surprised with the kindness of the people around here. Even though they were higher in rank as her, they didn’t want her to bow for them and she could address them by their names. They didn’t seemed to mind at all she was at the bottom of the hierarchy and shouldn’t be trying to mingle with them in the first place.

After some days she had come across an abandoned cottage. It wasn’t in very good shape anymore and it looked as if nobody had been there for years. She had kept an eye on the place all day and at night the cold had made her dare go look inside of it. In a normal situation it might not have looked like much. The windows and door all were broken and even the walls had holes in them. There was some evidence left it used to be a whitewashed building, but most of that was gone now. But to her it was a shelter, and even with the holes in it, it was much better than staying outside without any protection from the elements. Inside there was a dirt floor, she would have to try and find rushes for later. There was a rustic table and a bench available inside, though not in the best shape. In the next days she managed to find straw and make a pile of it in a corner of the house. She had made the pile against the best wall in the house, being sheltered the most at night. This had made her nights a lot more comfortable and a little bit warmer. Though it did stay very cold inside as she could not keep the outside winds out.

One day a blizzard was upon them. The stronger and stronger winds and snow made her feel scared even to be in her cottage. She has taken refuge in the tavern and slept there. The next day a lot of fresh snow laid outside of the tavern. As she was talking about the snow with Zipporah, playing in the snow got suggested. They had held a snowball fight, in which Zipporah had won, though she had cheated! Using magic. Nevertheless it had been great fun. After the battle they went on to make snow angels. This turned out to have been a bad idea. Her clothes had gotten wet from laying in the snow, which obviously made her be very cold. Zipporah had offered her cloak to use. The cloak had been beyond anything she had known, so soft and warm, it even was lined with fur. When Zipporah later told her she could keep the cloak she had first looked with disbelieve and had tried to refuse. How could she accept such a gift, it was much too expensive. But as Zipporah had insisted she couldn’t help herself but to cry from happiness. She had never owned such a rich fabric before, and it was an incredible kindness showed to her but above all she knew this unbelievably (magical) warm cloak might have just saved her from freezing to death the next time a storm came over them.

She hadn’t dared to mention her house to others as she was very aware it wasn’t rightfully hers even though the owners clearly hadn’t been around for a long time. She was afraid she would get in a lot of trouble for taking it just like that. The cold and snow made a stronger argument though, she had feared many nights she would not wake up the next morning. One night in tavern though she had slipped up, which made Mallory and Zipporah find out. Much to her surprise she had not gotten in trouble, instead they had helped her and given her gifts. For one Mallory had somehow made the cottage officially hers, she had even handed her a paper which said so. And as if that wasn’t way too much already they also gave her clothes, blankets, quilts, and many useful items like kitchenware. Again she had tried to refuse it, it was way too much. To her at least it were expensive items. For instance she had only ever had 2 sets of clothing at the same time: an old and a new set. Now there were 7 at once. Even her offer to work for them was refused. She didn’t want to be like a beggar and ask people for stuff but it seemed both impossible and rude to refuse as well. Truth be told, she was extremely happy with all these items. Thanks to them she could start to have a proper house. A blanket folder around the straw and a quilt to cover it almost made for a proper bed. Another blanket she had managed to hang up, making a divide in the house between the bed area and the rest of the room. And it would be needless to say kitchenware came in very handy as well. Now she had everything to start build up a proper life on her own. She would still be working hard to make her living, and there were plenty of things to overcome from her past. But now she had her own place to call home, and was independent for the first time in her life. Life was looking good now, and she could only guess what the future might bring.

As time passed improvements were made to her life. There were the material improvements, like her home being fixed up so that there were no more holds in the walls anymore. There still were improvements to be made though, like putting actual glass in the windows but she had shutters to close the windows when it got cold now. It wasn’t a luxury home, but it was hers and she was proud of it. Being independent, and an adult (as she thought of herself), came with challenges though. There were many tasks to be done in a day, or to be planned around the week. Making sure there was enough firewood, ingredients to make food and keeping the house clean were examples of this. But there also was working for other people to make sure she earned money so she would be able to buy food. She spend many days working outside on the fields, which was hard work especially if the weather was bad. By now she was getting better at this and managed to get a decent meal at most days. By now the weather was turning around, it was getting warmer and the snow was staying away. This could only mean one thing, finally spring had arrived! She had survived winter! This was such a load that fell of her shoulder, times would be getting better now for sure. Without her friends she probably wouldn’t have survived winter, she hadn’t told them this yet. She usually had a hard time sharing things that would make it look like she needed things or show weakness. She however really wanted to thank them and was still trying to find a way to do this.

Socially she also was improving, becoming even more comfortable around her friends. Sometimes even blurting out things without thinking about it first. She caught herself trying to joke or say something she wouldn’t have dared too before, and she never gotten in trouble over it so far, much to her surprise. There was this one time where she had become overcome by emotion and really surprised herself with her reaction, but even then she hadn’t gotten into trouble. It happens often in tavern that people are reading in a book and curious as she is she couldn’t help asking about their contents. In this particular day however she was invited to come and learn from the books in a private library. The problem was that she had never learned how to read and write. After all why would she need to? She was a peasant girl, later she would either do the household and take care of her husband or work for other people. Sitting around to read, that is something for rich people, or at least for men. Or so her father thought, and hence she never learned. She had always thought this to be normal, why would she have reason to doubt her father? And since they lived secluded she never saw other examples stating the opposite. However being in town it looked like everybody could read, even kids! She felt ashamed of not being able to do so and tried to keep it a secret. This was now becoming a problem. Her excuses as why she couldn’t make it to the library were being swept away one by one and she started to panic. She was ashamed of this and didn’t want people to know and was scared they would find out. They however kept eliminating her excuses making her more and more anxious and edgy. There also was some anger mixed into it, why wouldn’t they just leave it alone? The mixture of feelings caused her to have an emotional outburst. Despite believing she was an adult she still was just a teen, and it happens. It was her friend Mallory who was had taking over the talking and even started asking questions. Probably she had picked up on something being wrong but to Elisa it was really unnerving at this moment. Why couldn’t she just drop it? At this point she snapped, yelling at Mallory, saying things like it was stupid and she didn’t want to anymore. Once she realised what she was doing she quickly shut down. Now fear was taking over as the dominant feeling. She was yelling at somebody older then her, in higher status then she was. She was yelling to the queens sister! Even worse though she was yelling at her friend. She felt sad and guilty for exploding at her friend but being scared was the overpowering emotion. There was no way she wouldn’t be in trouble now! She tried to run for it, hide, but it didn’t take very long before she was called to come over. She didn’t really want to… but she also didn’t want to get herself any more trouble so she went back in. It had been Mantas to call her back, he usually let her do her own thing but just having witnessed the whole thing he must have felt the need to intervene. She was on the verge of tears but found to her surprise she wasn’t getting yelled at or she didn’t get any trouble. Mantas was very calm and trying to comfort her. And even Mele didn’t look angry at all, they all were understanding. This was quite confusing for her, she had been disrespectful and rude… and it was alright and they understood? They were still asking why she didn’t want to learn the contents from the books anymore. While she wasn’t making excuses anymore at this point she still found it very difficult to confess, only managing a ‘I can’t’ as answer. Mallory however managed to connect the dots and asked her if she could read. She had just looked at the floor, but this was confirmation enough. She was feeling quite ashamed of her outburst now and to make matters worse, the queen Aishe and the princess Aileigh had also been in the tavern that night. She had surely made herself look bad now. But to her amazement instead of getting in trouble, the princess had invited her to come over to Ettinfort and she would then learn her how to read there. Instead of getting punished she was going to go to a castle now?

She was quite excited about this, after all, when would you ever get a chance like this to stay in a castle? (it wasn’t really a castle, but a house this big would as well be a castle in Elisa’s eyes, she had never seen a house so big). The only downside was that it would be for 2 weeks, which caused some other problems of their own. Mainly her not being able to work and having to hire somebody to look after things when she was gone. But for this opportunity she would deal with it when she got back. Going to a castle and actually learning how to read was worth the risk of going hungry for a while after she got back.

As unbelievable as it may have sounded when she had arrived in Widu, Elisa had gotten herself in an argument in tavern. It had started out a normal conversation, the topic had shifted to families and having children. At this point in time Elisa had been told a story about cabbages, which she had no reason to doubt yet. She had seen a pregnant woman by now, but eating the special cabbage explained perfectly how a baby would get in there. The eating of this special cabbage didn’t sound too appetising to her. Upon saying this she had gotten the reaction she was too young for it anyway… and that’s where it went wrong. Actually it went wrong by her answer to that ‘I’m not a child anymore you know’.

She was in the tavern with Dwayberry and Tharthis and especially Thartis had seemed keen on teasing her that evening. She didn’t want to be seen as a child, it was something she was sensitive too. She lived on her own now after all. She had tasted the freedom and didn’t want to lose it, even if it came with its disadvantages and challenges. This however was exactly what Thartis pinned down upon with a tease asking her if she was sure, that she looked like a child. She herself hadn’t recognised the tease and had taken the bait with both hands. To be honest, she could have responded in a more mature way, but she hadn’t. When she brought up the argument that she wasn’t a child as she lived on her own, it didn’t have the desired effect as now both seemed to be worried she was living on her own. Apart from the teasing going on they might have had some valid arguments but Elisa wouldn’t see them. She didn’t want to see them. She had struggled quite a lot at being independent though she wouldn’t admit to it. She wanted to be grown but at times she still longed to be hugged or for somebody to take care of things so she wouldn’t have to think about them. But she enjoyed her gained freedom more. She got to make her own decisions instead of having to do as she was told, and she didn’t get punished when she did something wrong.

As the conversation moved along to how she ended up alone, if her parents had kicked her out? She got more nervous. She had lost her way, which she obviously didn’t mean to do, but she had ran into the forest which she wasn’t allowed to do. So technically she had ran away from home, from her father. What would people think of her if they found out? She had disobeyed her father and ran away. If they found out they would know she was a bad child, would they still want to be her friends then? Would they want to send her back? (even though she didn’t know the way back home) She did miss her father, at times she missed him a lot, but at the same time she didn’t want to go back. Another thing which made her bad… She surely must have caused her father a lot of grief. With the ongoing conversation they suggested her to live with a ‘real adult’, which she didn’t like the idea of at all. She would be giving up her gained freedoms. She didn’t want to do this, especially not since they seemed to be suggesting her to live with a stranger, absolutely not! Though they did mention apprenticing and learning a craft in which she then later could open a workshop of her own. This did sound nice, it should be an upgrade on doing odd jobs, working on people’s fields, cleaning,… She did like the idea of becoming a weaver and make clothes. Maybe she could find somebody who would teach her.

Elisa now is an apprentice weaver.

After duelling Cathrina, Dwayberry stayed in Widu for several more days as she waited to hear who she was to duel next. During this time she decided to visit her friend Elisa. She had heard about Elisa's home, how she lived there all by herself, and how she was very proud of her own place. But Dwayberry had no idea what it actually looked like. She imagined it wouldn't be a very big cottage, but perfect for a single person. Was it in a good state, however? Warm enough? No leeks in the roof? Shutters for the windows and a bolt to lock the door at night? Sad reality was that not everyone could be trusted and if certain type of men might find out about such a young woman living all by herself... Dwayberry shuttered at the idea.

However, she would make it look like a very casual visit. She would just visit as a friend, and not at all to check if this house Elisa was so proud of was actually safe enough to live in.
Of course it is, she thought to herself. The girl has been living there for a year or so now without any problems.
Then again, people could live comfortably for years and then suddenly get in trouble. Dwayberry knew all about that. Hadn't she been fighting yvyrms for years already before one nearly bit her leg off, causing a nasty infection? Sometimes, it didn't hurt to be extra careful.

And so, Dwayberry asked for directions to Elisa's home and quickly found the little cottage, next to fruit bearing tree. She had brought some orange pastries from a local bakery and a tablecloth as a housewarming gift.
She knocked the door "Elisa, are you home?"

In the time that had passed since she got here, her house had made remarkable improvements. It no longer was the run down cottage she found. A lot of improvements had been made. First there had been the structural improvements to make it more of an actual liveable space. Later the insides got improved as well. Both had only been possible with massive help from all her friends. A blanket hung over a piece of robe divided the room in two parts. The small part being a bed/wash room the bigger part being the main living area where everything else happened. The door could be locked and the windows had wooden shutters which had a latch to be closed. However somebody who wanted to enter really badly possibly could find a way.

Elisa looked up as she heard the knock, curious who it might be. This time being a lot more relaxed then the other time she had a surprise visit though. She laid down her practise material. She had been learning the basics of embroidering and now was instructed to practise it as much as she could to get the stitches nice and even. It could be hard to balance it all: school, her apprenticeship and all the practicing for both. It was tiring, but so far she managed. It was helpful the days were getting longer again, either practising was a lot easier in the daylight.

At hearing the knock she had no idea who it could be. She didn’t expect anybody…maybe it was Anno? Then she heard the voice and knew it wasn’t Anno. She quickly opened the door and saw her friend from tavern. Dway! What are you doing here? She exclaimed both surprised as excited. She looked over her shoulder into the house, a quick check to see if it wasn’t too messy. Uhm.. I mean, come in. she said sounding just a little bit awkward as she realised her first line could have come across as rude. She hoped it hadn’t. She was glad to have a friend over, but at the same time a little nervous as well. The nervousness about showing her house was a reminiscing of her upbringing where she was often reminded of being just a peasant. She had grown a lot in this regard but sometimes it still popped up. However, with most of her friends being of higher status the amount of times this happened wasn’t that high any more, compared to when she just got here. At the same time she was extremely proud of it all as well and was excited to let her friend in. A weird mix of clashing thoughts, the one getting the upper hand would most likely depend on her state of mind in that moment. And lately this often was the last one. She has achieved more then she would have dreamt of before she got here. Above this she had great friends who were like family to her. So despite being a little bit nervous she didn’t hesitate to open the door and step aside so Dway could enter.

Dwayberry smiled, seeing her young friend at the door. "Good, you're home," she said. "It's just a surprise visit because I'm in town."
Not quite being one to follow proper etiquette herself, she simply handed Elisa the items she brought and stepped inside, eager to look around. At first glance it looked very decent. No obvious holes in the walls or moisture stains on the ceiling. Warm enough, some basic furniture, shutters for the windows and a basic lock on the door.
Dwayberry nodded in approval "Nice home, reminds me of my very first home in Fenia city. I bet that's your bedroom behind that curtain?" She resisted the temptation to look behind the curtain to check whether the bed was of comfortable enough quality. Instead, her eyes moved over the different items visible in the living room. Perhaps she should have brought Elisa a book rather than a boring table cloth. Oh well, that could be something for another time.

Dwayberry went over to the table. "Ah, practising your sewing...", she muttered, before taking a seat. She wiggled a bit on the chair to test if all it was wobbly, and smiled finding it wasn't. "Looks like you found yourself a nice place to live, Elisa. Do you get a lot of visitors?" She carefully picked up the embroidery Elisa had been working on and studied it with mild curiosity, completely oblivious to the fact her visit could be seen as rather intrusive.

Elisa looked surprised when Dway handed her some things as she entered the house. She curiously peeked into it while Dway was still looking around. Seeing the pasties she barely resisted the temptation to eat one straight away and instead putting them down on the table. She was curious at the fabric, but just as she was opening it Dway seemed to be done looking around and had asked her a question. A big smile came onto her face as her house seemed to be approved off. A nod answered the question of the bedroom, liking the fact her divide got recognised as it being a different room. Yes, it’s my bed and also where I wash and change clothes.

When Dway took a seat and started shifting around a small worried frown appear, the seats were uncomfortable? It didn’t take too long before Dway stopped shifting and smiled, which for a moment she didn’t quite get. Did she perhaps find a comfortable position? It were basic wooden seats…but they were quite regular seats in her eyes. Not the fancy ones they had in a palace, but most homes wouldn’t have those would they? She didn’t have much time to ponder on it as Dway already continued. A smile reappeared on Elisa’s face as the verdict seemed to be a positive one.

You really think so?! Well… I didn’t really find it like this... But lots of people came and helped me and now it’s really my home! I do get visitors, but I also go to the tavern, there’s more people there usually, and more room… But because of everybody’s help it’s nice here as well and I have lots of pretty things, like this! She said as she had now fully opened the fabric which had lace and pretty embroidering on it. It however took her a moment to figure out what it was for as it wasn’t big enough for a blanket but too big to be a towel. Feeling silly when she realised it took her too long to realise it was a tablecloth. She hesitated a moment, but deciding she didn’t want it to get dirty already she folded it back up again. Wanting to clean her table before putting it on, just to make sure. After placing it carefully away she also picked up the sowing work to create more room at the table, also answering Dway’s previous question at the same time 'my teacher said I’ve to practice doing the stitches a lot, so they become pretty and even, and then I can learn to do figures.' After a small hesitation she asks, referring back to an earlier statement of Dway. Did your first house really was like this one?

Dwayberry smiled. "Ah, yes, nothing like a warm bath after a long day's work," she said after Elisa mentioned washing and changing clothes. "That's what I miss the most during sea travels. A nice bath." She was glad to hear Elisa had her basic needs met.

She looked over at her young friend, tilting her head as Elisa folded the tablecloth back up. See, she should have brought a different gift. This was too boring for such a young woman.
"If you don't like the tablecloth I can probably return it, or resell it elsewhere. You can probably make a prettier one yourself soon enough anyway," Dwayberry said. "Perhaps another gift is more suitable. A book? Pillows for the chairs? Or a squirrel? I've had one follow me around recently and no-one has been willing to take it off my hands yet."
She patted the other chair, "Let's sit and eat while we talk. Yes, my first home looked somewhat like this one. Only I didn't find it abandoned, it was owned by someone else who had several small properties. I rented it from him until I had enough money to buy my own piece of land and have a new home built." She smiled. "I still remember how good it felt, though. Second thing I bought with my first graveyard money."
She hoped Elisa would come sit and eat with her now. It had been hard enough to not try a pastry already on her way over.

Elisa frowned slightly at Dway’s bath remark. Who had the time to fill a whole bathtub bucket by bucket with warm water after a long day’s work? She decided not to go into it however. She was brought to a different topic quickly enough as Dway seemed to think she didn’t like her gift. Had she done something wrong that made Dway think so? She tried to go back her memory to find out what she might have done wrong. Had she thanked Dway? To her shock she realised she hadn’t. She bit her lip, the first time Dway came over and she was forgetting all manners it seems.

I’m sorry, I forgot to say thank you. I really do like it! it’s really pretty, I’m even not sure if my table is clean enough for it…. You really don’t have to get anything else, it’s already so nice of you to give me this gift. You didn’t have to do that... though a book or a squirrel did sound more exciting it would be rude to say so she thought. They were very different things though, hard to compare. One question she couldn’t get out of her head though, pure curiosity. So the squirrel just started to follow you? Does that happen often?

She realised she was still standing when Dway patted the other seat and suggested to eat. Another thing she had failed to ask! She was really not being good at being the host… One thing she’d get right though, before she sat down. Would you like to have a drink? I have milk and orange juice and uhm I can make tea…

She sat down while saying her list of drinks, giving Dway time to decide and let her finish her story first. At the same time also putting the cakes out onto the table, unable to resist them for much longer. It wasn’t easy to imagine Dway living in a small home. It was probably easy to think that somebody who had it well had always lived like that. She had been raised to believe in a hierarchical system after all where she hadn’t thought changing in between the statuses would be likely. Now she was doing it herself, she was an apprentice now. When she was done she would know a trade. She would have thought that possible before she got here. But then again, many things would fall into that category. She nodded at Dway remembering how good it felt. It does feel good, though I was lucky I found it and I was allowed to stay. It would have been a while before I could have bought a home. A slight frown came on her face as she remembered the early Days of being here, before she knew anybody. People don’t like to have you around if you look like a beggar.. She shook her head slightly as if to shake the memory out of it she looked up at realising something. Wait the second thing? What was the first thing, ...if I can ask? And just a second later she added a second question, what’s graveyard money?.

Dwayberry held up her hands to calm Elisa down as she went to thank her profusely for the tablecloth, and chuckled. "Alright, alright, no need to be eternally grateful for this. Keep it. I'll think of something more fun for your birthday. When is that again? Oh and orange juice would be nice, been a while since I had any of that."

She waited for Elisa to come sit before answering the other question. "The first squirrel followed us because my son was with me, foraging. I'm pretty sure he invited it to come home with us with a promise of nuts. I think perhaps the second squirrel followed the first one. Not sure what my son might have told it, but I don't want to risk a whole squirrel family at my house." She sighed, "It was bad enough already when my cat had kittens"

She smiled when Elisa sat down and took her time to enjoy the pastry while Elisa spoke. She eventually nodded and swallowed the bite she just took. "Oh, tell me about it! I remember a priest chasing me away because he didn't want beggars near his temple! I broke their windows in response." she grinned and took another bite.
Hmm
Perhaps she shouldn't have mentioned graveyard money. Not everyone took kindly to the practice of grave robbing, and she had no idea what Elisa's stand on it was. Dwayberry had grown up in a woodcutters' town, surrounded by steep, heavily forrested hills on rather rocky soil. In such a place, every bit of flatter, fertile ground was used for growing crops. Space wasn't wasted on graveyards. There was enough wood to be found to dispose of dead bodies in a different way, and the deceased person's belongings were always distributed among surviving family or fellow townspeople. A such, the idea of burying the dead together with money or other items of value was rather ridiculous to Dwayberry. The living had need for such items, the dead had not. And so it was completely ethical to take it. However, she knew not everyone shared that opinion.
"Oh, eh, it's money found at a graveyard," she cleared her throat, "You know, poor people can do desperate things and I was very dirt poor at the time. Anyway!" She held out her hand so Elisa could see the simple, rather worn looking iron ring she wore. She referred to it herself as her 'freedom ring', being the first item she somewhat impulsively bought after being freed from the Bravian prison. Perhaps another thing she should better be vague about to Elisa. "I bought it to celebrate having money to spend, and to remember the day I moved to Fenia City."

"It's alright, you wouldn't be the same if you were nice."
