Still winded and sufficiently humbled, Jo gingerly held out the staff to Nikola and nodded.

"Yes... please..."

Holding her hand to her side, she groaned. That was going to leave a bruise.

Nikola took the staff from Jo and held in both hands, testing its weight and balance. It was a plain staff, but well made. The balance seemed a little off, but not so much that it would have an appreciable effect on the wielder. She placed her hands on the staff and moved her feet into a fighting stance, left foot grounded with right slightly ahead, left hand gripping over the stave and right hand about two feet forward and gripping the stave from beneath.

“This is how to hold it. Your dominant foot moves with your dominant hand and that hand should be placed where you can control the movement of the stave. Your non-dominant hand will control the balance and thrust. Like so.”

Holding the stave at an upward angle in front of her, she pushed off with her left foot while simultaneously thrusting the stave forward with her left hand, guiding its arc with her right.

"You can easily block an opponent's thrust at this point if you are the defender."

She demonstrated by pushing the stave down to the left, moving it back to center and then pulling it down to the right. She returned to a relaxed stance and moved her hands to either side of center of the stave.

“That position was good for thrusting at an opponent, to push him back or take his head off. This position will be better for closer combat with another stave.”

She demonstrated a few moves, showing how to block high and low and to push either end of the stave toward an opponent to get past their guard to strike flesh. Afterward, she relaxed and held the stave out to Jo.

“Here. You try it. I’ll get another one to work with you and show you some defensive moves if you’d like.”
