Entering the tavern with Toxic, Petal hung back a bit at the door. The dimness after the bright sunshine put everything in shadows. As her eyes adjusted she noticed a few patrons seated at the tables scattered about as well as at the bar. Seeing only a few women about, including the single serving maid, her nervousness increased. She looked uncertainly at Toxic. At his smile she blushed and looked down to hide one of her own. Lifting her gaze she sighted a small table tucked away in the corner. Pointing to it she asked Toxic if that one would be suitable, raising her voice a bit to be heard over the hubbub of conversation floating around them.

As they made their way to the table, Petal was aware of the eyes of the women trained on Toxic and felt an unexpected stab of jealousy. She clenched her jaw in sudden annoyance with herself. She cut her eyes sideways and studied him, taking in for the first time his full appearance. The rumpled clothing, the small rent in the knee of his trousers, the button missing from his shirt, the unkempt, unruly hair. Yes, he was devastatingly handsome but what manner of man was he? And after all his invitation was just a friendly one, from one new neighbor to another. He had shown no interest in her and she vowed to curb her thoughts. She had come to this town for a fresh start for herself, not to complicate her life.

Her new resolved fresh in her mind, Petal folded her hands on the table and leaned slightly forward. Toxic hadn't seem to notice her slight stammer, or was too polite to mention it, giving her more confidence to speak. H..h..have you had a chance to wander around a b..bit yet? I j..j..just arrived yesterday and haven't had a chance yet to even visit the t..town. I was on my way there this m..m..morning when I stopped by your home.

Arriving at a empty table they took there seats and waited for the serving wench, looking over at Petal he studied her beautiful face and noticed her nervous twitch, wondering if it was a permanant thing or a temp nerve thing, so you havent been here long either then, i think i will like it here, and with your fine company in this great tav what more can i want, and if you want a escort to the town just ask, i am not that far away funny enough, and we can have some fun, explore together seeing as we are both newcomers to this town, looking over to the wench he gestured her over, before ordering the tavs special dish, the yawning rabbit stew, after taking there orders she hurried off returning shortly with their drinks, picking up his huge mug of ale he held it up, good health and happiness always and to the start of a great friendship slamming it into petals mug he swigged it back and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, wonder where the food is i am starving, i will go and check i think they went to France to catch a rabbit, excusing himself he went to find where there food was.

Petal leaned her arms on the table and propped her chin on her hands as she listened to Toxic. When he asked to escort her to town, she blushed and dropped her eyes. Looking up at him through her long lashes, she smiled but kept silent. Her thoughts began to run in different directions making it hard to concentrate on his words. She wondered what it would feel like to run her fingers through his hair, to pull his head down to hers, how his lips would feel against hers. Pulled from her reverie by the thump of mugs on the table, she lifted hers to have it clinked loudly against Toxic's, some of the ale splashing out. She took a deep drink and almost choked. This ale was nothing like the watered down wine she was used to at home. She took another long swallow before placing the mug on the table and turning her attention back to the man sitting across from her.

Toxic stood and left the table, going to check on their order. Petal watched him go then bent her head and took a deep breath. Her mind seemed to go a bit fuzzy and she lifted her mug to take another drink. Putting it back on the table, she felt a slight twitch in her arm and her hand accidentally bumped into the mug. It shot across the table into Toxic's and before she could catch it, both mugs spilled over. Oh my goodness, she cried and jumped up as the ale pooled over the table, dripping off onto her lap. Drats! she cursed under her breath as she tried to wipe it off her skirt with her hand. She glanced up at the door, wondering if she had time to sneak out before Toxic returned to find her in such a state. Sighing heavily she realized it would do no good. They lived next door to each other, they were bound to cross paths sometimes, and how would she explain her disappearance? Resigned to seeing it out, she took her seat again and arranged her skirts as best she could to hide the dampness. Then she reached over and uprighted both mugs, hoping he would just assume he had drank all of his. She was just pulling hers back towards herself when she heard the sound of him approaching from behind her. Pasting a smile on her face, she turned to face him.

Returning back to the table he sat back down and grabbed his mug, finding it empty he looked over at Petal thinking she must have been very thirsty and by the looks of it couldnt find the toilet in time either, deciding to ignore it like petals bad twitches, he waited as the wench brought them there food and dumped it on the table, two more mugs of ale as well, the first ones went down a treat, hardly even noticed emptying my mug was so dam good, he winked at petal and if want a tip later you better take that miserable look off your face, one tip for you now, be quicker and less moody, smiling he watched as the wench went off muttering to herself, looking at Petal he laughed at her red face,as she looked down at the floor, come on lets get stuck in, and i hope you got some money to pay for this, laughing he started wolfing down the stew and hoped she knew he didnt mean it about paying for it, watching as she tucked in, he thought she seemed pleasant enough a bit shy and nervous, with a few strange habits but he would soon change all that.

Aware of Toxic's eyes on her while she ate, Petal lowered her gaze and concentrated on the stew. She almost choked as he mentioned her paying for their meal and darted a look at him. She frowned, unable to tell if he was serious or not. Mentally calculating the change in her purse, she knew that this meal would set her back quite a bit, all the money she had left was supposed to go towards stocking and supplying her new home until she could find a job.

As she continued to eat she watched Toxic from lowered lashes. Though no one could deny he was handsome, his manners left much to be desired. Yet he did seem friendly enough. His sharp words to the waitress though gave her pause. It sounded too much like her father to suit her. Had she escaped one controlling male to wind up with another? Well first impressions were not always the right ones. After all, he had probably thought her an idiot when she knocked on his door. Perhaps his charm was well hidden, along with a big heart, two qualities that could overcome quite a bit of bad manners. Willing to give him a chance she put her spoon down and sat back in her seat.

Where did you live before here? she asked, curious about his background. Why did you decide to settle here? She picked up her mug and took a small sip, wondering if it was the ale or her newfound insight into him that seemed to have cured her stammer, at least temporarily. Probably the ale, she admitted to herself with a small smile as she took another sip. She placed the mug back on the table and looked at him expectantly, waiting for his response.

Looking up at Petal he smiled, i think it was one of the best things i did moving here, dont think me to forward but i would like to get to know you better, take you to the town dances, walks along the river, picnics, things like that if thats acceptable by you, and in reply to your first question, why i moved here, before i lived far away in France, i decided to return to England, i missed the tavs and english people and the english language plus i heard the work is better here now, and i think i made a dam good choice on returning when i did what with the great company and this friendly town i arrived in, and i couldnt wish for a better neighbour like yourself as long as you dont sacrifice and torture people all hours of the day and night, i want to do my house up and have cornfields, make a new start and hopefully have you by my side, after we get to know each other better, if thats ok with you, i dont want to scare you away with my forward nature, but i know a good thing when i see it, and look forward to getting to know you, your life so far, the things you enjoy, everything that makes you happy and sad, lets have another ale and you can tell me what you feel and want in your life, your future plans and dreams,
hoping he hadnt said to much and scared Petal off, he called the wench over again and ordered two more ales, smiling at her this time and he was surprised to get a smile back in return, looking back at Petal who had that, i must run away now look in her eyes, he smiled and waited for her to speak hoping her stammer and twitch had calmed down a bit now she looked a bit more at ease with him, thinking the ale had helped her he thought about getting a barrel or two delivered to his shack.

Feeling much more relaxed, Petal leaned back in her chair as Toxic talked. She felt her blush returning as he talked about dances and picnics. A sudden image of being held close in his arms as they danced took hold of her imagination and she lost the thread of conversation. She dropped her gaze to her folded hands on the table and tried to concentrate on his words. She looked up startled when she caught the words "by my side". Deciding that she had misunderstood him, as a man like him could never be seriously interested in someone like her, she swallowed her disappointment. She bit her lip, annoyed with herself. She had just met this man. She knew practically nothing about him. Why was she letting him have this effect on her? Another gaze into his eyes told her the answer. There was just something about him, something that tugged at her and drew her to him, something she couldn't control. A small smile lifted the corners of her lips as she wondered if she even wanted to control it.

Conscious that he had stopped talking and was waiting for her to say something, she felt flustered again. What had he just said? Something about screaming and nature and ale? No, no, no, that wasn't quite right. Her brow furrowed as she tried to recall his words.

Oh, she began slowly, choosing her words carefully to avoid that dreaded stammer. I love dancing, and p..picnics as well. She smiled at him. And I only t..torture once ever fortnight on a full moon, so that shh..shhouldn't disturb you too often.

The rest of his words came back to her and she took a moment to think before answering, not really sure what to say. I'm uncertain about my future right now, she finally said. I didn't plan on c..coming here, it was just where my feet stopped c..carrying me. My only goal was to get as far as possible from my home. I... she paused and glanced down again, her voice lowering. I had d..differences with my father, she admitted. The slow anger she always felt at the thought of her father threatened to overcome her new-found tranquility and she picked up her mug, draining it. Setting it back down on the table a wave of dizziness came over her. She looked back up at Toxic, again taken with his good looks which had seemed to double in the few seconds it took her to drink. She smiled brightly at him, if a bit lopsided. As far as what makes me happy, right now getting to know you better would, slipped out before she could think. She clamped her mouth shut before the rest of her thoughts could come tumbling out as well and more thoroughly embarrass her.

He smiled as he listened to Petal talking, unable to stop staring at her beautiful face, taking her hand he looked deep into her emerald green eyes, i dont know why your still so nervous, so try and relax a bit, i dont bite, well never on the first date maybe the 2nd or 3rd, depends on the moon, so do you want another drink or we can do what ever you want to, tell me what makes you happy right now this minute and we will do it how ever mad or wild it is, live dangerously for once in your life, laughing he waited to hear what wild and wonderful thing Petal wanted to do.

As Toxic took her hand she felt butterflies in her stomach. Gazing back into his eyes her heart skipped a beat. His smile completely disarmed her and she found herself returning it. Emboldened by the ale, she laced her fingers with his and leaned forward. There is one thing I've always wanted to do, something I've always dreamed of, she confided to him. She bit her lip, hoping he wouldn't laugh at her. Her father had always done so, telling her it was a fool's dream, that it was too dangerous and she was too clumsy and slow to catch one anyways. She leaned closer to him, the blush once more turning her cheeks crimson as she revealed her heart's desire, her voice dropping to almost a whisper. I've always wanted to ride a Pegasus.
