[ORP]Ravenous

Vhagar...

Like the slightest whisper in her mind. A single word but... nothing else...only blankness. Words and thoughts, it seemed like a thousand memories swirled around her but if she reached out to try and touch one it became nothing but smoke. She stood before a building... Temple...another whisper. The words for things did come to her. Perhaps they did not take as much space in her head to not vanish.

It seemed as if she moved inside like a dream, floating but not really in control.

Greeted by a stranger in a robe? The stranger asked her purpose and she whispered back that that was a good question. The stranger established that she had food. She wrinkled her eyebrows. How had she gotten the supplies that were on her? She found herself being given rags and instructed where to clean. The stranger asked her name and she whispered the first word that had come to her as she stood in front of the temple. It was all she knew to say.

People waved, smiled, welcomed. So many people it almost seemed a blur to the girl. How could she keep up with so many faces when...Wait...I have not even seen my own, I don't recall it...

She moved to where a mirror hung in the Temple, she had not yet left. Her hand traced the lines of her own jaw. She seemed a bit thin though she didn't know why she thought that, mayhap she had always been thin. Blonde of hair, though it was a bit dirty and almost matted in spots. She was stricken by the glitter in large golden eyes staring back at her. She had not seen such in the faces of the many she had seen already. So many shades they were, though. Secrets of her own past could not be read in that mirror face. It was almost as if the reflection mocked her for it.

You are nobody...nobody at all...it seemed to say.

With a snort she turned away and suddenly found herself faced with robes again. Given a house and a small field, which she must accept because the town needed wheat and really she would be doing the town a great service and therefore the Kingdom and even the King, and not the other way around. Her thoughts swirled but she found herself unable to say no and merely whispered a thank you. Eventually, she mentally kicked herself, you will need to speak up...

Leaving the Temple she followed robes to where she would apparently reside, how does one grow wheat anyway?

Pulling weeds, sliding her fingers through the earth, somehow she didn't hate it but nothing about it seemed familiar. The deep smell of the dirt was somehow comforting, though.

How hard could it be to place the seeds that would make her new field grow? Slowly she seemed to be coming out of a daze. She even smiled at a singing bird rather than just staring off. Slowly the cold in he bones seemed to ebb away. It's tendrils would not give in easy, much like the tendrils of the absolute emptiness that gripped her mind. Still she met new faces, all of them seemed new and not a one sparked the cold coal of memories in her mind. Nothing seemed familiar. All asked who she was. Vhagar... Still the only thing she could think to say, but was it a name? A place? A nonesense word provided by a broken mind desperate to find something in which to associate itself? Would she ever claw her way through the emptiness around her memory and know all the answers to so many questions? Did she really want to?

She thought of her bath then, she had stripped and stepped into a nearby creek, feeling nothing of the water and still enveloped in the numbness that plagued her. But she had felt the edges of a map of ravines on her flesh through the tips of her fingers. A map that seemed artfully etched on the flesh of her back. Then...then she had shuddered and the nest thing she knew she was curled into herself on the floor of her new home.

In the night she heard a voice cut through her sleep and she screamed.

There!! I've finally done it!! This one will be much better, a formidable weapon!

She looked over the loose dirt of her field. Today she would be planting. A sort of pride grew within her, pride in herself. This was good. It would be good. She was doing well for herself all things considered. What was she before the blankness? Who was she? These answers still eluded her but she was learning that even without them, she was capable. She was finding her voice as well. At times it seemed things tumbled out of her mouth from out of nowhere and she would have no idea why she said that or why she said other things the way she did. Things like this served to confuse her, snippets of a past life she still knew nothing about, but she also latched on to them.

She was still meeting many new faces, some she felt drawn to in odd ways. She also did odd things. Belching a flame seemed odd to her at least. On top of that she heard voices in her head again as she had waken from her sleep. This time at least it had not frightened her but was just as odd as anything else that had been happening to her since she came to this place. Read my Lips No New Taxes! It had been nearly a shout in her head and she had quickly sat up in bed to find the source. Instead she found an odd stalky vegetable in her lap. Oh well, at least she had breakfast sorted then.

She sighed to herself. Nothing left to do but to dig holes and start planting and hope for the best. Even with her ineptness she was convinced something would grow.

Mostly she sat beneath a tree and let it's shade caress her with a cool embrace as she watched her field. As it sprouted, pride in her accomplishment grew. Whatever she did before no longer mattered in those moments. Her tidy little home and small field were proof positive that even when one lost their entire being, life could go on. She was a blank slate at this moment and every single experience seemed new. In many ways she felt this made her almost like a child again, to experience the world in innocence without the baggage of a life past coloring all those experiences.

She had also found the training ground. Juggling eggs came easier than she thought it might and she was feeling a growing strength within her. There was an urgent need to fill her time with "new" experiences in order to distract herself from the cold fact that she literally knew nothing about herself, was not even certain of her own name. So many times she did what she could to push those thoughts to the back and tell herself to think of them later. Unless she exhausted herself, she found falling asleep difficult. Taking a job patrolling the town and looking for any problems helped keep her on her feet all day and sometimes through the night and to distract her. Sometimes it would also make her sleep hard enough to dream. A wonderful dream.

She was the wind, flying high, the land below her and nothing but the sky above. She was strong and not at all awkward. She was Queen, nothing could bring her down.

When she awoke from this it was always with a bit of sadness and more than a little panic at suddenly feeling trapped by her own weak body. An aggravating and deep itch always seemed to crawl through her skin as well. The dream was lovely, the aftereffects were far from it. She would only be calmed by pouring cool water over herself.

People came, people went. Every day was a round trip around the city, waking up at the farm, walking to the Town Hall and then the cathedral, briefly checking into the castle before walking home... every day, hundreds of faces passed and she glanced at not one. Was this so bad? Every week at the temple hospice she saw weak citizens pass away, gone as soon as they had come. For all the magic in these lands, there wasn't much that could be done to save the ones that had no will to live. This face though, was something different. Was it? She stood outside a small house, her hands closed around a package tied in twine, debating her next steps foward. A pleasant home, a neat field already being well tended. There was no reason to think something was wrong, from a few glances in the street and a passing encounter in the tavern.

Anything to help. That was her motto, although it wasn't really. Something she told herself when she hated her job, or when she was unsure about how to do her job. Being a priestess would be easy, if she had done what others did, and appear only once a week to deliver a story no-one really listened to. But that was not her way, and so nothing was ever easy.

This was highly irregular. She moved up the path, twigs snapping underfoot as she did so. Should she call out? Why the trepidation? A knock instead, then. She raised her empty hand and rapped on the door of the small house, breathing in the humid summer air. Let's see what the will of this one was like.

Musings. Daydreaming. She had taken a small amount of time to just sit and wonder. Her eyes squeezed shut hard, willing any memory to surface. SO many times it felt as if it was just nearly there and then would vanish like wisps of smoke. At times the thought of remembering something would only fill her with an intense fear and she would think to herself that it would probably be better that she just kept moving forward. Sometimes, the thought of having no identity clawed at her. Sometimes she wanted to KNOW what her name was, no doubts. She wrestled often with the dichotomy of her mind.

She did this now as she sat on the floor in the middle of her small house. At least she supposed it was hers now. She laughed and cried nearly in the same breath. She felt more and more of two minds. Is this what going mad felt like?

A knock knock knocking on her front door. Her nails pressed into her palms and she quickly pushed it all back again, her face going serene. Slowly, gracefully, she stood on her feet and moved to the door. Perhaps I will remember a name...this time the face might be familiar...maybe just maybe someone knows me.

Slowly she opened the door and studied briefly the person before her. Robes again? Or the same as before? The face seemed familiar but the name eluded her.

He...Hello?

She cleared her throat nervously, and then smiled. Now she was here, the face did not seem as otherworldly as she remembered it. Troubled, even. Did she detect restless nights, or was it her imagination? Did the woman even recognise her?

"Greetings," she began, "we met in the tavern not many hours ago, and in the temple before that. In passing, anyway... forgive me. You had mentioned you had forgotten some... things." Peering behind the woman's shoulder she saw the room behind her and smiled. It was, it seemed, not very long ago at all that her farmhouse had been a simple, one roomed cottage. That cottage had seemed like a palace to her, and she found herself wondering what this room felt like to the woman standing in front of her.

Vhagar. That was it. Aida had not realised that she had forgotten the name before deciding to even embark on the visit. Perhaps she should thank the mages - and the lake fish - that they had given her the ability to recall such things.

"Vhagar," she said, the name sounding like a lyric on her tongue, "I do not know if we managed to be introduced. I am Lady Aida, or Priestess Aida, or Lady Mayor. Depending on who you ask." She paused to smiled, "Just Aida is fine."

Her fingers closed more firmly around the package in her hand and she glanced over the woman's shoulders again. "May I come in?"

Duke watched as Aida approached the house.
He was sat across a high branch in the big tree that the homes resident had recently been sitting under.
She'd done well with the soil, like Aida had with her potato's.

Duke was considering whether to send this one mail in the usual manner or whether to try communicating with her himself.
There was something of the ephemeral about this apparent human.
She reminded him of a bit of Bale and of Saela and of a couple of other creatures.
Aida was good with people though. Duke decided to watch for a bit before trying to get down from the tree.

He needed to time to figure out how anyway.
It was always easier to get up a tree than to get down from one - maybe not 'easier', but less fraught.

The girl watched or rather studied the woman in front of her. Offering a small smile as the woman spoke she noted the way she took in the house behind her.

Uh ...yes I believe we met...forgive me as I have met so many new people recently...who knows maybe they are not all "new"...

She blushed and bit her lip. When speaking to others it always felt so awkward, she didn't really feel comfortable with anyone else and she was wondering all the time if the person in front of her had ever seen her before. perhaps in passing, perhaps had even spoken to her..before the blankness.

Vhagar...

The word sounded so pretty when the woman in front of her said it. Not at all awkward like when she herself said it in complete uncertainty. It was a lilting and soft word as if a note blown by a soft wind.

Thoughtfully, she looked back at the woman, not even really noticing anything in her hands. So focused was her mind on the pleasentness of the word when spoken allowed by she who stood before her that she almost missed a question asked. Abruptly she was brought back from the slight euphoria and pride that a word that MIGHT be hers could sound so beautiful when spoken by another and she caught her lip again in her teeth.

Er...that is...Yes...but I...

Pausing she mentally kicked herself and gathered her thoughts.

Of course. No reason not to really.
