[ORP/Event]Fireprooffing the City

Post by Duke_of_Earl »

Scene begins in the early morning.
A breakfast table has been set up for early arrivals containing bacon, eggs, crispy potato slices, bread and cheese, cream and khlaua, oats, honey, hotwater and dried mintleaves.

Ester is sitting nearby with Duke writing out duty rosters for people to sign up for. Each one will then nailed to a tree along the roadside:

One is labled "Quarriers" -Job to fetch stones and grit via basket and wagon. -The standing wagon has some pick axes in it.
Another is labeled 'Mortar Mixers' -Job to blend silts and sands into a paste for the masonry.
A third is labled "Slate makers"- Job to craft clay into horse shoe shaped plates for the baking. -A makeshift outdoor oven is in the process of being constructed at that station.

It was almost the Eve of the Phoenix Festival, and there was an air of excitement. The city market bustled with people, each buying in their food and gifts in order to celebrate the month long event. The bonfire would be lit, rebuilt and kept burning throughout the whole month on the temple green, giving the townspeople a place to congregate and celebrate each night.

This was, perhaps, risky business. There had been a bonfire last year, but it was much smaller, held by the lake. But it's relative distance from most people meant that it had been a quiet affair, attended only by the fishing folk who lived near. Aida, now priestess, looked up at the magnificent building that was the Cathedral, it's dome glinting in the morning sunlight. She had plans, and those plans included a lot of fire. After all, it was the Phoenix Festival, wasn't it? There was a theme.

She gazed around at the wooden rooves and bit her lip. Bit of a risky theme. Time, then, to agree with Duke's plans that the city receive something of a safety facelift. It was going to be expensive, but there was nothing for it. Most of the houses had been built in the time of Project LVI and some years before, build of wood, wattle and daub. Only the more expensive town houses and workshops were built with brick and stone, and those still had rooves with wooden slating. And after Casimir's vision... well, it set her teeth on edge.

Approaching the table, she carefully poured the pitcher of hot water over some mint leaves in a cup, adding tea leaves and giving it a stir. She smiled at some of the builders who were taking the opportunity to fill up on the free food before taking one of the rosters in order to begin directing.
