[ORP] - Gurgkh's Green Gobliny Gadgets (and Assorted Goodies)

The town of Fenia was now the home of a new creature, namely the plucky little green goblin who went by the name of Gurgkh. At all times of the day and night, he could be seen scuttling through the streets and narrow alleyways, though he preferred to stay out of sight as much as possible. The biggies tended to dislike him and they were rarely shy to make their feelings known, be it through unkind words or a hearty kick to his green behind. Granted, sometimes his mean'n green nature got the better of him and he snatched a nice shiny here and there, but since he was quick and smart about it, he usually did not get caught. Biggies were, after all, not bright.

Fenia was so different from anything he was used to. Even the biggest goblin tribes had not banded together to build cities of such magnificence and opulence! Mostly because goblins built villages in the swamps out of mud and reeds, but still. Gurghk was also still puzzled at the way humans and other biggies traded nice shinies for other things. It was so much easier to snatch 'em, but not everybody could be smart and cunning like goblins. So smart, in fact, that he had found a nice place to stay on his first day in town. It was a small abandoned sidearm to the open sewers that eventually ran underneath the city. Nice and secluded! Strange that the biggies avoided it, after all it was so very cozy. Almost like the swamps at home, especially to the sides where the colorful mushrooms grew. His iron stomach could handle those perfectly fine. Free food!

In fact Gurgkh had turned in some of the shinies in exchange for the permission to grow vegetables. Some of the big cobbles had turned over and he could grow all sorts of stuff in the exposed ground! He had even carried some old planks over to offer him shelter from the hot sun and the storms. This really was as close as it could get to goblin paradise.

Many excited "Gaaaarrrr"s and "Guuuuurrrrr"s could be heard during Gurgkh's first forays into the busier sections of the town, especially the markets. What a place! Even the biggest raiding parties seemed like small groups compared to the many people living together here. And all the nice and shiny things they traded with each other! Relying on his quick and sneaky hands and feet, Gurgkh managed to snatch a few round shinies as well as the odd vegetable here and there, their previous owner not even noticing anything was missing.

All in all his decision to come here and make a nice sludgy home for himself had been the right one. But still his overactive little goblin mind was not at ease. So much to explore! So much to do! His attempts to show his good faith had at first not succeeded, considering he could not keep his fingers away from other peoples' "possessions", as they called them. Another interesting concept he had learned about since he had gotten here. Biggies tended to keep their stuff and shinies close to themselves to guard them with watchful eyes. How very strange when you could just bop others. Oh well. Still, after a while some funny-dressed biggies let him clean the windows of an especially large and beautiful house. Apparently it was really important too, though Gurgkh did not understand why really. Keeping it shiny was very important as well, or so they told him and while a goblin's understanding of what constituted as clean of course differed vastly from that of most other races, he did his very best scrubbing the windows until they sparkled.

His own little shanty of course still looked as run down and ugly as ever. Very goblinish in style, which suited him just fine. Dumb biggies and their stone houses. What if they collpased? Reeds were so much nicer. Green, too! Green was good.

What a busy couple of days it had been since Gurgkh had staked his claim on the little patch by the open sewage pools! The Viceregal Scribe had just smiled at him condescendingly when the goblin told him of his grand plans to grow vegetables right there by his improvised hut, but who was laughing now? Well, either way, it was Gurgkh and it was a laugh of true happiness! His calloused green claw-liked hands had served well as makeshift plows for the soft, some biggies might have said, toxic soil and he now dug with them through the sludge again to recover... potatoes! Unusually large ones, or so some might have said, but they were just perfect in the little green monster's eyes. Tasted nice, too! That must have been one of the first steps towards a life of hard honest work or whatever the biggies kept calling it. A rather jarring change for an especially mean and green goblin such as he, but Gurgkh was happy to accept it. In small steps, of course. He was still prone to snagging nice shinies and other enticing things here and there, but who could blame him, apart from those priests. And guards. And alert marks.

Still, getting settled here was but the first step in his grand scheme to become the greenest and meanest goblin there ever was! He was doing good on the green thing, given that his skin took very well to the sludge and sewage in his immediate neighborhood. The smell did not bother him either, in fact, it reminded him of the deep swamps. Some biggies tended to fall over dead merely breathing in that sort of air, but goblins thrived in such environments! He felt even more energized than usual, to the point where he started getting jittery when he stood still for but a few minutes. He was always walking, always thinking his little green goblin thoughts... mostly concerning himself with ways of getting more shinies with less effort. Probably not an exclusively goblin thing to ponder, but still, an important one! The second most important thing played into the first indirectly, but it was a ouzzling one, too. Unlike the goblins in the tribal swamp villages, the more "civilized" biggies had a more stable and static way of life. They chose so called professions. Goblins did a little of this, a little of that and a lot of looting and being green, but only the shamans and the chiefs really stuck with their day to day duties for longer times. And then even they got whacked over the head a little too hard and replaced often enough.

Gurgkh was much the same in his feelings in this regard. What did those biggies say all the time... "go make something of your life"? Strange saying, that one, but Gurgkh was not going to argue. Oh, he wanted to, but those damn biggies were simply too strong to risk it. He knew what to do, though! One time he snuck into the shaman's hut and stole a mortar and pestle as well as a little clay pot. Quite the adventure, that one was! Ever since he had honed his humble alchemical skills, skills that were closely tied to his curious nature. Of course his nature was also green and mean and thus he had little idea of how things worked. Scientific approachs, learning from his peers and precursors, all those methods were entirely foreign to him. He simply mixed together whatever he found hoping that its hidden properties, magical or otherwise, would work together to create... well, something! Potatoes were as good a starting ingredient as any. That settled it! He was going to become Fenia's best alchemist and tinkerer! Oh, how exciting! He jumped up and down with a happy look on his face, so much in fact, that the hastily stacked planks almost collapsed over him.

What a busy couple of weeks it had been, even for the already very antsy little goblin. He had gathered enough pieces of drift and plywood to fashion it into a proper gobliny city abode, meaning he had nailed and glued it together with mushroom paste and mud. Very sturdy for his standards! The next great innovation was a sign he had made and proudly positioned above the hole that served as the main entrance for his little castle. It read "ASSORDED GUDDEES AN GADGEDS FORR DA MODDERN GOBLINY GENTULLMAN AN BIGGY" in big green letters. First Gurgkh had wanted to call his business "DA GOBLIN EMPORREEUMM" but had decided against it as he preferred to let people (goblins, mostly) know that he had "guddees" but also "gadgeds" waiting for them, both of his own ingenious design. His latest invention was a lovely perfume for goblins, though of course any biggies interested in buying it were welcome to try it, too! It had a strong sludge note with but a mysterious hint of wet rat and swamp roses. Very en vogue in the swamps, that much he remembered.

Business had been slow, however. Biggies did not seem very interested in purchasing pet rats or swamp perfume and the few goblins who ventured forth from the swamps still had problems grasping the strange concept of private property and money... shinies, as it were. Gurgkh himself struggled with it from time to time, too, snagging pretty flowers from the nicer gardens of the city and sitting there looking mesmerized by the biggie market at all the wares and most importantly the gold exchanging hands. One day he too would be a well-respected artisan and merchant, he just knew it. Maybe his new and improved love potion would work! The last one had been proven to only work on goblins and strange dragon ladies, the one he had concocted after that simply turned things and people pink (a very pretty color, though not as gud as green) and the one after that simply was a mushroom liquor with extra herbs he had found by the roadside. That one had been a slight success as it got everybody drunk and thus somewhat more receptive to romantic advances. Just not from goblins. Still, he remained optimistic. By rooting out all the bad and not so gud ideas, he was bound to come up with a gud and then a real gud one!
