[ORP] The Shack - Grazilda's Home

Post by Grazilda »

Grazilda's eyes surveyed the surroundings. She squinted hard and waited for the faintest of sounds. She heard nothing, or at least she heard nothing that resembled a threat. She inhaled deeply to catch a scent of fire, of powder, or anything that may related to something lethal to her. She detected nothing. Then, she entered her new home.

Not even a minute has passed when Grazilda went out and sat on a stone by her new home. She looked around again, suspicious yet at the same time relieved. Her new family was nearby and she was not used to having people near her. It has been a long time since she was at close proximity with other people, or creatures for that matter.

She lowered her hand and felt her dagger. She always had one at bay. She was ready just in case some crazy creature would want to harm her. Yet she missed her arrow. A long time ago, her arrow and her axe were her best friends, back in the day when she was a full time warrior, back when she fought side-by-side with her people, back when life was different.

Now, her arrow was gone and she only had her axe with a puny dagger for emergency purposes.

And she hoped that she would not need to use any of them soon.

Grazilda sat on the rock outside her new home. She just returned from her trade missions and something prevented her from going inside her shack, as she called the tent where she lived. She stood and started to pace back and forth in front of the shack. Her mind raced as question after question started to fill her mind.

She would not deny the fact that a lot of things happened on her trade trip. From the outside, it was nothing but a simple trade of goods between two parties : the seller and the buyer. However, deep within, something else happened to Grazilda.

She gazed up at the skies and squinted at the bright light from above. “Mages, help me. Are you playing tricks on me again? Should I offer another head on a silver platter?” She sighed and looked down. Clearly, the gods had nothing to do with her dilema. However, there was this nagging feeling that she felt deep inside. It urged her to do something.

She kicked a stone and paced back and forth. “It's not hard to get in the shack, right? No one would have placed a trap there or something?” She asked aloud and wondered if anyone who heard her would think that she went crazy.

She took a deep breath and finally got in the shack. Her eyes scanned the room for any slight change or any hint of disturbance. She memorized the detail the interior of her shack for that purpose. She squined and inhaled deeply to catch a possible scent of a stranger. After a thorough investigation, she finally concluded that the shack was safe and she slumped on the bed and removed her dagger. She placed the dagger on the table beside the bed.

Her eyes landed on her arrow---her seemingly neglected, abandoned and forgotten arrow. This made her frown. Way back, she was known for her arrow. It was her crowning glory. However, those days were gone. She looked at the arrow one more time and then fell asleep.

Grazilda woke up early that morning. For some peculiar reason, the first thing that her eyes laid on was her arrow. She closed her eyes and pulled the blanket over her head. However, an image flashed in her mind which prompted her to open her eyes. She sighed and groaned. She reluctantly removed her blanket and sat up straight. "Concentrate, Grazilda. Concentrate!" She ordered herself. However, she knew that she fought a losing battle within.

She grumbled as she reached for a comb and stayed on the bed. She sighed when she untangled her dark brown hair. She knew that under normal circumstances, her internal battle was nothing serious. The problem was, Grazilda was no ordinary woman and her life was far from normal.

Higher purpose... Rieron's words rang in her head. Did she give up on life altogether that she forgot what was her purpose? Her recent behaviour definitely denied the idea that she turned her back on life.

She left the bed, took a towel and left her tent for a morning bath. She drowned her thoughts with the cold water that she poured over her head. This woke her up as the stinging temperature gave her goosebumps. As she scrubbed herself clean with a lemon-scented soap, she removed not only the dirt in her body, but also the worries in her mind and the turmoil in her soul.

Her bath done, her internal battle partially forgotten, her hair dried and neatly combed, she got some new found strength and took her arrow. She stopped and was not able to move. She realized that her arrow, her favorite arrow among her set of arrows, was broken. She stepped backwards and fell to her knees. It was a sign. It was the sign that she was told from a time long forgotten.

It was a sign that she didn't want to see.

It still dark so it was easy for Oreo to sneak out. He was told that Grazilda will be coming home today. And so in front of the shack, he waited patiently for her. He sat up straight and alert. He wanted to hear even the faintest sound that would tell him that she near the caravan.

He wanted to welcome her home.

It was almost noon time when Grazilda finally finished her trade business in town so she started to walk home. She heard her tummy complaining and shook her head. She was, indeed, hungry. She wanted her trade mission to be done quickly that she opted to skip breakfast. Thus, her stomach shouted its complain of being neglected.

She saw the caravan as she walked and saw her shack. As she got near the shack, she suddenly stopped dead on her tracks. There he was, waiting for her. She wondered how long did he stand there just to get a glimpse of at least her mere silhouette from afar. And there he stood when he saw her walking. He barked at her happily and ran toward her.

"Oreo!" She smiled and knelt to welcome the mutt.

Oreo waited for her for hours. He knew she'd arrive today. Then, he sniffed and raised his ears. He caught her scent. He barked happily and got up on his feet. He ran as fast as his two legs can carry him.

He saw Grazilda kneel and he jumped up and pushed his small paws against her shoulders in an attempt to jump and lick her cheek. He barked happily to welcome her. "Woof!"

He was glad that she's back home.

It was a quiet evening and Grazilda just finished drying her hair after her evening bath. She stretched her arms and sat on the bed. Her back was straight and her legs crossed and bent over her feet. She thought about the things that happened in the past few days; some were bad yet most were pleasant. She reached out and took something from the side table. Instantly, her face glowed into beautiful smile. Her fingers lightly touched the wilting daisy. It might not look as beautiful as it was when it was first given to her, yet it would always look like the freshly-picked daisy in her eyes, no matter how wilted it would be.

She closed her eyes and enjoyed the serenity of the tent. Finally, after an evening with three children in the tavern, she finally found her peace...

...Until Oreo started to bark.

Oreo just finished drying himself from his bath today. He left Grazilda by the river as he didn't want to bother her while she constructed the new bath room. He never understood why Grazilda needed the bathroom when no one was around while she took her early morning, late afternoon and evening baths. But then again, there are lots of things that Grazilda did that he never understood. He never understood why she always mentioned Devereaux's name in her evening prayer to the gods. He never understood why she kept on practicing with her weapons when there wasn't any enemy around. He never understood why she had to chant strange songs while having a bath. He definitely could not understand why she would not cry even if she felt so sad. Yes, he felt it when she's angry, happy and sad. That was why he stayed with her no matter how much she pushed him away. He felt like she needed a friend. And he knew that a dog is a man's, or a woman's, best friend.

He found a broken arrow and he knew well that Grazilda didn't want him to play with it. So he went on and sniffed something else. He found a dried daisy. He sniffed and barked happily. He recognized the scent from the daisy. He could distinguish at least two people's scents and he sniffed again to verify his suspiscion. This lead him to raise his little nose and to sniff one more time. A certain scent lead him to Grazilda's bed. He sniffed some more and matched a scent from the daisy to the pillow. He gently bit on the pillow and pulled it out of the pillow pile. He pulled stronger until the pillow landed on the floor.

He placed the pillow on his usual sleeping spot in the tent. And he slept over that specific pillow---Devereaux's pillow.

Tired from a day of digging, sawing and nailing wood for her bath room, Grazilda went to her shack. As always, her eyes scanned if anything was moved in the shack. Her eyes landed on her disarranged pillows on her bed. She frowned as her hand quickly held the hilt of her dagger. She noticed a ball of fur plopped on his usual spot in the shack.

She deemed that her shack was untouched, with the exception of the mutt, so she went to the bed and silently sat. She removed her daggers and secured them to a spot where she can easily reach them should there be any danger.

She placed her palms together and lifted them high above her head. She looked up and closed her eyes. She uttered a short prayer to the gods. When she was done, she lowered her arms and fixed her pillow and laid on the bed. She frowned at the realization that one pillow was missing. It was not just a pillow but it's a special pillow.

She looked at the mutt and frowned. She groaned. "Oreo!" She reluctantly got out of bed and headed straight to the sleeping mutt. She carefully lifted the mutt's head to remove the pillow and replaced it with another. She smiled at the fact that the mutt selected that particular pillow.

She went back to the bed and laid her tired back. She turned and closed her eyes as her hand touched the special pillow while she slept.

Oreo was in front of a huge plate. His mouth watered at the sight of all the delicious food. He barked gladly and thanked the cook. He wagged his tail and jumped into the giant plate which contained his generous supper. He bit off a large chunk of the steak and rolled around the pile of meat around him. Then he hit his head.

"Woof!" Oreo barked as his head hit the hard floor. He blinked and realized that it was all a dream. He pushed his paws the ground as he yawned. He was sad because it was all merely a dream. He could still taste the sumptuous meal in his tongue. He licked his mouth and rolled on the hard floor.

He paused and wondered why was the floor hard. There was a pillow under his head when he slept. He yawned again and stretched his paws. He reluctantly got up and looked for the pillow.

He looked around and noticed that Grazilda was there. He walked silently to her and found what he was looking for. He stopped and noticed that her hand was on the coveted pillow. He silently and slowly placed his nose on the pillow and slid it under her hand. Then, he raised his paw to slightly push off the pillow. He lightly bit on the pillow and slowly pulled it back and off the bed.

He pulled the pillow to his sleeping spot and slept on it. He hoped to dream about the pile of steak once more.
