Amor's aery

Post by Amor »

Opening one eye at a time, Amor slowly woke up at the early rays of the first sunlight. Lazily he stretched his limbed and thought about turning over and nap away for a couple of hours more. However the day promised to be better as yesterday and warmer as well. He rose to his feet and shivered a little before heading to the barrel of rainwater to wash up. Refreshed and in a blythe spirit he went out, out of the yard, the street, out of town even. Up the hill he ran, frolicking through the green meadows, right up the tree line. A little out of breath he turned around and watched the town in the valley beneath, the sunlight reflecting on the white walls of the houses and mansions, all surrounded by the massive stone line of defense.

Amor brushed away a few hairs from his warm winter coat that were still clinging on before he took a path that led deeper into the forest and higher up the hill. Up there, where the trees had stopped growing and the ground was rocky and barren, Amor has found his spot. His refuge at times when he wanted to be alone, to contemplate about his existence, or just to figure out a problem, but mostly because he had an excellent view that extended from horizon to horizon. It brought him a better perspective when everything else was little and tiny. As if he wasn’t big enough already. Amor called this place his aery.

Today was a strange day. It started when is was still dark while it was supposed to be dawn already. Lately there had been more of those strange events, like those rocks falling from the skies and so on. Anyway, Amor was on his way to deliver a load of steel to the weapon master of Bravia, a kind and patient man who was always happy to see him, especially if Amor was carrying these raw materials.

The route took him through town, across the center, past the town hall and westward. Amor paused to catch his breath at the announcement board and noticed there were new elections coming up, only a few days ahead. He scratched his head and thought how quickly time passes. It was only weeks ago when the rightfully elected mayor had forced her way back in the office. Amor met her once, briefly, and did not know much about her. And neither did she know Amor. When his eyes went over the parchment he saw no candidates had applied for this high valued office.

For a second Amor thought about putting his name down for banter but discarded the idea; he had heard somewhere that to become a high-ranking politician, you had to be neutered. The idea alone made him shiver all over. As he lifted his merchandise he thought how much he preferred to stay intact, uncompromised and unblemished.

Arriving at his destination, Amor took off his knapsack and began to stack the steel onto the pile he had brought last week. He saw the weaponmaster running around, looking very busy, trying to divide himself into more persons. Amor sighed as he saw the man doing so many jobs by himself. As of today he had to fulfill all the council positions by himself. Amor didn't envy him but decided to offer his help to him, though his capacities and capabilities were limited. At least he could bring him a cold beverage, which he did.

A relative peace had returned to Bravia though the armies stayed vigilant as Amor became aware of that while inspecting the walls. The attacks from the Xants were less often and less devastating. Only on a few spots were signs of where the hooligans had left marks of their mischief. He nodded friendly to the captains as a greeting before returning to his workshop where his hardworking assistant Linda had kept the fire burning while Amor had made his inspection.

Amor swung his newly crafted unencrusted sword from left to right, cutting off the puppets’ arm with a single blow. Without stopping he swung his backhand back, resulting in the head tumbling to the ground. Hopeful Amor glanced to Weaponmaster, but he just nodded… as usual. Amor waited for him to speak his words of wisdom, words he knew by heart now and when he did Amor rolled his eyes and sighed as he put back the weapon in its sheath. As social protocol dictates, Amor bowed respectfully and greeted politely as he made his way out of the ancient facility.

Amor whistled on his way to the market but when he arrived the articles he wanted were not there. On many occasions he had inquired for wool and something called an accia but always returned empty handed. When he returned to his workshop, Linda had already swept the floor and trying to have her pig give paws. When he told her that the necessary materials were not available, she suggested that he might raise the sheep himself since the chickens were less productive as they were so old that a few were using a cane to walk around.

Amor sighed as he and his assistant closed their stand at the market for the day. As if the lack in demand of his shiny products was not bad enough, once again an obnoxious Yvirm had stolen an article when he and Linda were negotioting about a new piglet. He wrote a quick note and placed it on the empty booth so all could see that he was still forging various items and selling them at the lowest price... but only upon request.

He saw how drepressed Linda was. Her sighs had become deeper and more often each day. Beside feeding her piglet there was not much else for her to do. The supplies for their business were no longer available on the local market and there was no demand for their products either. They both had witnessed how the people of the city moved out or fell further into a long sleep. Even their prayers to the Mages after listening to the sermons on their frequent visits to the cathedral had not helped. Amor had shrugged at Linda's remark that the graves in the yard had outnumbered the inhabitants. Amor knew she was only kidding but still....

Finally peace had settled down a bit and yet Amor felt still a bit unsettled. He had asked the rightful elected mayor to relieve him of his duties but until his replacement was appointed, every night he volunteered to defend the townhall without pay. He could not be around full time since he still had to serve in the Bravian army as well. Amor had to close his shop as well. With all his duties there was simply no time. He had even had to put his studies on hold for a while, not that he was such a great student but he missed the challenges that the teachings posed on him. But most of all he missed the freedom to just gallop off into the meadows and hills, the wind in his manes, going faster all the time, clear his head. He sighed as he thought back to the events of last week, the red dressed lady, the ranting and court case. He wished he could just forget everything and never had to relive it again.
