As he neared the top of the hill he saw a bright light explosion, like someone had suddenly opened the night and daylight dawned. When he topped the hill and saw the monkeys heading toward him, he saw one on the ground and one wounded. He charged in full lycan rage as he met the black-furred one head on at a full run. He tackled that monkey and they both hit the ground clawing and kicking and gouging in the mud, the blood, and the leaves. The beast was supernaturally strong, even by TK's standards. They fought till they were back down the hill near the portal opening. TK finally found an opening and shoved his claws through the chest of the beast. The beast split open and blood ran out of it from everywhere like it was filled with nothing but blood. With that one dead he looked around to see what the status of the other four monkeys was.

Nikola knocked a fourth arrow, but hesitated as TK's lycan form sprang onto the large black-furred one. The untouched monkey seemed to be using their fight as a shield until they finally tumbled out of her line of fire toward the bottom of the hill, leaving only the one unscathed monkey to guard the portal. It began peering into the portal as though looking for or at something and she quickly took the shot. The arrow made its purchase in the beast's neck, the explosion of light illuminating the spray of blood as the arrow nicked the main artery of blood. The beast reached for the arrow, but hit the ground before it could pull it free and was still.

In the dimming light from the arrow strike she saw the raven that Varann had released flying toward the portal and then Varann xerself melted into shadow leaving NIkola feeling completely alone. A thrill of fear washed over her but she quickly regained control over her emotions, allowing the power within to pulsate through her, filling her with strength and purpose. She moved within the cover of the trees as silently as she could to get closer to the group of monkeys milling about the foot of the hill. She would need to cover TK's attack before any of that group decided to attack him. For the moment they seemed confused and alarmed, but were slowly coming out of the surprise. Two headed for the hill while one launched itself at TK. Varann had warned that the portal must remain clear and she trusted TK to be able to manage a single monkey without much, if any, trouble.

Aiming the arrow in a arc that should intercept the two running for the top of the hill, she loosed the arrow, closing her eyes against the sudden burst of light that erupted as the arrow found purchase in the ground between the two beasts and the portal. Quickly she moved to another position and nocked the next arrow, letting it fly toward the one beast who had halted its forward progress to block out the light with his hands. That was its last conscious act as it fell to the ground with an arrow jutting out of its back.

Seeing the last creature near the portal drop Varann stepped out a strange liquid dripping from xer hand as xie started the ritual to close it. Xer voice was harsh gutteral and devoid of anything but a imperious tone xer mind locked in a battle just as deadly as the one Nikola and TK faced.

Xie could sense it, the being that was preventing the portal from closing on its own. It was old as day or night. A force of destruction even older then the Abyss. It was with that being that varann sort to fight. Xie reached out mentally trying to force it to back downand allow xer to close the portal.

The only sign of this battle of will and the toll it took to any that looked was a trickle of blood dripping from varann's nose.

The Raven cawed as it circled above awaiting xer sign

TK didn't see any other monkeys and began to relax. It was then that he was reminded of the wound in his side. There was blood, but he couldn't tell if it was the monkey's blood or his blood. He felt where the wound was and there was just a small nick now as his body had healed itself nicely in the short time since he was stabbed by the overseer of the other five. He was covered in monkey blood and would have to find a creek or a lake to wash off in before he went back to his orcish self.

He saw Varann come towards the opening and he headed for higher ground to keep an eye out in case any other things decided to make their presence known and threaten Xer plans of closing the portal. He found Nikola and leaned on the tree beside her.

The last monkey had been felled and she had another arrow nocked in case anything else moved to attack or try to stop Varann. She felt him before she heard or saw him as TK joined her in the trees. She smiled at his simple praise, her eyes darting to take in his bloodied form. “Are you okay?” she asked quietly as she swept her gaze back out over the clearing and up the hill to where Varann was doing…something. She knew his ability to heal himself and his presence felt strong, but the woman in her worried about him, even if worry was somewhat misplaced when it came to TK.

Varann’s raven cawed and continued to circle around above her. She wished she knew more of what was happening, or even more of what she was involved in, but TK had asked her to come and help and that had been enough for her. Now that the immediate danger seemed abated, at least for the moment, she had time to think about what she had done and was seeing.

“Do you know anything about that portal that Varann is trying to close?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, knowing that in his Lycan form his sense of hearing was enhanced such that he would have no trouble hearing and understanding her words.

Suddenly Night swooped down on varann's form and with a ripple merged his form with xer's. Their will strengthened the battle continued.
Seconds passed then minutes. Nothing seemed to happen

Then suddenly portal began to rapidly expand then shrink. over and over it happened sending out ripples of engery across the hill.

Blood began to trickle from the corner of xer mouth as well as xer nose and with a sudden explosion of energy the portal closed.

Varann collapsed

TK looked at Nikola and ran down the hill towards Varann. There was blood all around some of it had come from xer. There were no more enemies left to fight, the portal was closed, and it seemed it was time to get back to town. TK picked up Varann and put the seemingly lifeless form over his shoulder and headd back up the hill.

Nikola ran toward Varann when she saw xer fall. TK reached xer first and after a quick assessment picked xer up and threw xer over his shoulder. Nikola reached out to the still form with her power and probed it for signs of life as she followed TK away from the portal. She found what she was looking for, although the thread of life there seemed rather tenuous. She knew Varann to be a being unlike any on this plane of existence, though, and even tenuous life signs were hopeful.

"Do you know how to care for Varann in this condition?" she asked TK, "Or perhaps it would be better to take her to the Mysts or even to Firestorm Manor." She was unsure whether she would have the skills needed to treat Varann but she could provide the creature a warm bed and sustenance for its recovery unless he knew of a better option.

Tk changed back to his orcish form despite not having water to rinse off with immediately available. He would find water later. Right now he was off to the tavern with Varann in tow. "Care for Varann? I haven't got a clue how to care for a golem. I was going to take xer to the tavern and let Idunno do something for xer. But if you have another idea I'm all ears."
