Changing destiny -CRP

Post by Elisa »

Elisa looked up nervously as she heard a knock on her door. Who would it be? She wondered. Though whoever it was at her door, she wasn’t nervous for them to be confronted with her house.
It had made quite some improvements since she moved in first. The most noticeable probably being the walls that had been fixed, some time ago. While in the very beginning they would have had holes in them at some places. The windows had wooden shutters, though no glass windows. On the inside there was a mat made out of rushes instead of a dirt floor. Compared to most houses, hers was rather small, as it was only a one room house. However, an extra blanket had been hung over a piece of robe between the two walls to create a divide. On the smaller side of it, it had her ‘bedroom’. Instead of a pile of straw she had upgraded to a straw filled bag, which served as matrass. Which had a quilt on top as cover. Next to the bed there was a chair she used to store her clothes off the ground at night and as a dressing station in the morning. It was also where she put the bucket on to get washed. As this wall didn’t have a window, this part of the home could keep warm the longest and it was the most private. Apart from these things there also was a picture of her and Az in the room, which Thartis had magically made. The other larger part of the house served as everything else. It had the fire she cooked on, a table which also functioned as workspace for anything else that needed done and a chest where her clothes and some other items were kept. Part of the wall was used as pantry and had a shelve that housed her other homeware. They also had the books she had been given to learn how to read and write. And as of recently there also were scraps of material which she practised her sewing on. It might not seem a lot to most people, but given she arrived with nothing it was quite impressive for her to have.

Normally she might have been worried what people would think of it, or if it was clean enough. This wasn’t on her mind now, even though the house was in a lot messier state then it normally would be in. She wasn’t alone in the house, and it was to this other person she glanced cautiously and nervously when she heard the knock. While on the outside all would look normal, on the inside it was not. The house was a bit of a mess and there were extra crates, which were being loaded up with her stuff. She was helping in this, even though leaving was the last thing she wanted to do. However she didn’t dare to do anything else at this point. As much as she had avoided talking about her past or about the fact she had ran away from home in fear of being send back. Life had found another way to make this happen. Her father had found her…

To her great surprise she had found her dad standing by her house when she got back from her day working at the workshop where she was apprenticing. After she had ran away and her father had sobered up, he had realised she was actually gone and had started searching. First in the woods near their home, then expanding it more and more. He had enlisted the help of some friends to spread the search. One of those friends had located her, he had watched her and gathered as much information as he could while her dad was travelling to Widu. He had told her dad everything he knew, this included some of her actions and people she interacted with. And so it was that her father was already on edge when she got home. Despite the surprise and worry she had had for this moment, she had dropped her bag and ran to him like a young child would. They hugged each other for a long time. She did love her father a lot and had missed him terribly. Even if that sometimes felt contrary to her wish to stay here and her fear to be send back. And her father loved her as well, even though she often messed up.

Eventually though, the hug did end and the other part, the part she didn’t want to go back to, came up. She had known it was inevitable, especially when she had realised the smell of her father, the smell of somebody who had been drinking. But she also knew she deserved it. She had ran away from home and had broken so many of her father’s rules since she lived here. Yet it still hurt when her dad broke the hug and slapped her on her cheek, hardly.“ Don’t you dare ever run away again” he had added to his action, as if she didn’t know yet it was wrong of her to do this. She couldn’t help the tears forming in her eyes while her hand cupped the now reddening cheek. They went inside after this, Elisa was glad for it as it would prevent any passers-by to see it. She had always found it very humiliating if others saw her being punished. The other person would know she had misbehaved and she’d feel like a little child for being punished. This was also why she felt uncomfortable showing any wounds or bruises to others, even if the reason she got them was something very different.

Her father had a lot of pent up emotions and they were boiling up in him now. Anger is what got the upper hand. She got lectured on all the things he had learned she had done. During the lecture she received a couple more hits. That’s what usually happened, a couple of slaps to let her known she had messed up and to set her straight again. Often it was just that, but not today, she know there would be an additional punishment and it wouldn’t just be no dinner or extra chores.

Elisa had practised defending herself in fights with some friends, but despite this she just seemed frozen and only muttered she was sorry over and over again. There would definitely be bruising on her face and she felt her lip had cracked at this point. After the lecture it was time for her punishment. She knew that for all she had done it warranted the use of a tool. Running away on its own would have granted that, and there were all the other things as well… She knew this would be a severe one, and she knew she deserved it and yet she pleaded while her father unbuckled his belt, and promised she would never do it again. But it was no avail, not much later her arms were wrapped protectively around her head as she laid bend over the table. She hoped nobody would be close to the house as the sound of the lashes and her screams to them, surely could be heard outside. When it was done she had let herself to the ground. There usually came a speech afterwards, when her father had cooled down a bit, on how he didn’t want to hurt her but she made him have to do it. That he did it out of love and so she would remember the rules and not get in bigger problems. He would sometimes provide some comfort as well, though not always. She believed it too, she truly believed it was her fault when it happened, because she always ended up being bad and not following the rules. This believe had somewhat lessened during her time in Widu, thanks to her friends who often challenged her believes. But she still easily regressed back. There was no speech now though.. Her father just told her to pack her things, they were leaving…Now! Elisa didn’t know why her father seemed so nervous to be here, but given recent events she wasn’t protesting or asking questions. She had had some time to collect herself and wipe away her tears while her dad went to gather crates from his cart.

It was a bit later when the knock on the door happened. They had already made some progress in the packing of her things, of which at least some would be sold she already knew. She was nervous for whoever was in front of the door and her dad to meet. But even more so she was worried whoever it was would notice something was wrong, or worse: connect some dots. There was a whisper of hope for a second that this person would be able to change her dad’s mind and she would be able to stay here, where she was building a life of her own and had made so many friends. Though she didn’t dare to nurture this hope. On indication of her father she remained silent while he went to open the door. Every move she made was still hurting, she didn’t dare to do anything else then obey while she heard her father say to whoever was behind the door “whatever you want, we aren’t interested. LEAVE!”

Things seemed strangely silently on the street she wandered down. As the sun was dipping below the horizon, creatures were settling down for their evening meals or getting ready to begin their day. It was always interesting to see such diverse routines and an area as diverse as the lower-income street kept her mind occupied.

Her attention shifted from strangers to her friend when the cottage came into sight. She knew Elisa would have spent the day apprenticing, which was exactly why she had a basket in the nook of her arms. There was wine and snacks for a girls’ night in. She was pretty determined to get Elisa comfortable with a sleepover at the cottage. The girl had worked hard for what she had. Aileigh only wished Elisa would be proud of that hard work instead of ashamed for her worn clothes and thatched roof. Often times, spending time with Elisa made Aileigh wonder if she’d be able to do it. She had the knowledge to get by, and she was stubborn enough, yet she was arguably more naive than even her sheltered friend. It made them an interesting pair, with their innocent gazes and bubbling questions.

Approaching the cottage, her stride changed. Her steps went from casual with a pep of joy to cautious and concerned. A scent was in the air: blood. The hairs on her arm stood up, black brows furrowing. As she neared, she could hear two heartbeats from within the home, but it was otherwise silent amongst shuffling.

The damphyr knocked confidentially. A lot could be said about how someone knocked. In this instance, the knock announced her as forward and ready. While she was uncertain about the scents drifting from under the door, she did not convey it with the rapping of her knuckles. Fenia taught her a lot about display and portrayal of one’s self.

When an angry face greeted her from above, she remembered the phase You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. It was always silly to her, but the mindset worked well for her mother. Her smile remained, voice chipper to match.

”I beg your pardon, but this is neither your house nor is it your place to ask me to leave, sir.”

Her eyes stayed on him while she spoke, but the moment she paused for breath, her eyes tried searching behind him. He was blocking the entryway with his body, but what her eyes couldn’t see her nose picked up on. There was fresh blood and in this proximity, she recognized the scent as Elisa’s. Determination set on her face as she stared up to the stranger. The only reason she had not forced her way in yet was for the rapid pulse emitting from the silence.

”I should like to speak to the lady of the house, if you would step aside.” She took a step forward, daring to push into the stranger’s personal space. ”Darling Elisa, are you alright?”

Her concern was rightly placed, of course, yet her attention was not. It was not until a hand was in the air did she notice the swollen knuckles. And it was not until that hand came down on her that she realized she was distracted from what was now a threat.

Elisa's eyes grew big as she realised who was at the door when she heard the voice. Her father didn't know who Aileigh was, that she was a princess. He had always told her to be respectful, especially to those with a higher rank, if he had known he would have reacted quite differently. 'dad' she eventually spoke out, already upsetting him more because she was been told to stay silent. As her father raised his hand Elisa's body seemed to move on its own. Her father was going to hit Aileigh, her friend! She didn't want her friend to get hurt because of her. Above this, they would also get in a lot of trouble for hurting the Princess, she was sure. Her actions were based on her feelings and not her thoughts though, or she might not have moved at all. She reached out to grab her father's arm 'dad, don't. ..' she said before her father turned around in disbelief. "How dare you" he said in a tone in-between talking and shouting in. He had a grip on her arm, pulling her loose from him. She was backhanded with the promise she would be dealt with later. The impact made her stumble back, into one of the crates they had been packing. Not able to keep her balance she stumbled back and fell. During her fall she had hit her head against something, she didn't know what it was bit she felt the pain in her head. It made her struggle with consciousness. She tried to keep her focus but her vision became blurry. Not able to keep herself awake, everything turned black as she lost consciousness. It had all been too much, the emotions, the pain, this had finally tipped the balance .

Her father in the meanwhile had turned around and, taken advantage of the distraction, slapped Aileigh in the face. How dared this girl be so rude, he wouldn’t be pushed around by a little brat. "see what you made me do girl!" He shouted trying to push her out of the house with a strong grip on her arm and close the door. "now go home before you cause more trouble!". It probably wasn't they best way of handling it, but he hadn't yet returned to a calm state of mind.

The sight of Elisa froze Aileigh. It stilled her heart to see her friend so beaten and in such distress. A gasp escaped her when the man before her, whom had been called to as 'dad', struck Elisa down with enough force to send the small girl reeling backwards. She stepped forward, calling out to Elisa, but the man blocked her path with another swing, hand landing on her own face. Her head snapped to the side from impact, a resounding thwack filling the suddenly, oddly silent cabin. Her head stayed lowered for a brief moment as he yelled at her, a mark of red staining her rosy cheeks.

It was in this moment she realized she had never felt rage before. Not true fury. Of course, she had been upset throughout her young life like any child. Now she realized that a deeper level of anger existed, deep within her chest. For the first time, she understood both of her mothers.

A blue gaze rose up through narrowed eyes. Her expression brought a look of confusion in return, questioning if she had any idea what was good for her. His push was resisted in an effortless stance that ought not be possible for a girl her size. When it became apparent she was not leaving, another swing came down, hand swift with the intent to hit harder to get the message across.

This one was caught. Her hand met his forearm before his hand could meet her face once more. The damphyr's strength was on display as she pushed him back, causing him to stumble now. She let go of his arm, a fire released in her eyes.

"What sort of man does that to his daughter? Now I understand. Everything."

Her tone would have ran a chill down her own spine in an ordinary circumstance. She was a soft-spoken, sweet girl. Never had she posed as a true threat to anyone because she never had to. She always had others to defend her. Now, it was her that needed to do the defending and it unlocked a hidden side to her. A thirst. An ache in her throat she had never felt before, prompted by the building eruption within her.

"Elisa is going nowhere."

The girl in the door didn’t seem to move at all, even though he was trying to push her out the house. If he had not been drunk, he might had realised at this point it would be smart to step back. He had already went way out of line but rage and an alcohol induced mind were a terrible combination. This girl had some nerve! Well if she didn’t want to listen to his warning… He took another swing at her, but this time she intercepted it and was able to stop him from doing so. She even pushed him back.. a girl her size versus a grown man, it shouldn’t be possible for her to do so. Then a realisation hit him, it must be one of those magic creatures that roamed around. His own grounds were surrounded by talisman that kept magic at bay, he didn’t think he would need it for the short term he was here. Especially since nobody seemed to have any clue… it made him even more upset, all the magic in the world and it hadn’t been able to help him when he needed it the most…

When the girl spoke his thoughts were interrupted. This girl…she dared to accuse him? What did she know? Nothing!, the insolent thing. He of course still had no idea who he was facing. And if he was sober his mind would have warned him to try and take a different route, this girl obviously was stronger then she seemed to be and who knows which other magical powers she possessed. ‘One that teaches his daughter to behave’ he retorted ‘unlike your parents.., they should have put you over their knee more often, teach you some manners. You know nothing girl!’ His fists were clenched but he kept his distance. For the first time he took a closer look at the girl. Her clothes seemed to be well made and she didn’t look like she just came back from working. Would she be one of those spoiled rich kids? It made him more anxious though, that were exactly the kind of people Elisa should stay away from. He had thought her so, but as his friend had informed him, his daughter had been breaking a lot of rules being in this town. Involuntary his eyes glanced to the door, for the first time a tone of worry interfered with the anger that had been brought up in him. Should he back down and opt for a safe retreat? His anger interrupted again: because this girl is telling you so?

‘Who do you think you are to make such claims? She’s MY daughter and she’ll be going home with me, where she belongs! You have no rights to take a child away from their parents now do you?’ He said with a smug smile, thinking he had won this argument or whatever it was ‘Now I told you to leave!’
Elisa in the meanwhile, was still unaware of the things happening around her.

Who did she think she was? The question rung in her ears, muddled only by the beating heart of the man before her. She was acutely aware of the racing thumps emitting from his chest. Like a beacon to a sailor, it drew her closer with a promise of something more.

"I am Aileigh Sanchari, heir to the Boreens Durri Natsia, future matriarch of the Sanchari, and stepdaughter to the High King of Fenia. You should be bowing. I am royalty and Elisa is my best friend."

The black haired girl stepped closer, eyes narrowed. It was very unlike her to present her status or to use it to her advantage. There had never been a reason to wave it around. Creatures would often be able to assume her station from her attire or accompanying guards. A strange sensation came from her canines, a pressure hitting her lower lip as fangs made their debut.

"And I could crush you like a twig."

In demonstration, her hand extended towards the nearby chair. She did not need to move her feet with it just being within her reach. Her fingers wrapped around the top of the back, grip tightening until a satisfying crunch was heard. Splinters of wood fell to the floor, the panel collapsing in on itself as she retracted her hand.

It was after that statement that damphyr began to more consciously register the second, more faint heart beating in the small cottage. Elisa was hurt and she needed help. Her gaze was unmoving as she looked up to the abuser.

"Get. Out. Elisa loves you, so I will give you one chance."

When the girl answered his question, it surely wasn’t what he had expected. He didn’t care very much for the first part, some Roma girl… but then at the mention of the king of Fenia his heartbeat went up and his complexion pale as he became very nervous. He however was still trying to act like it didn’t bother him at all.
"Royalty? Phuh…Just a stepdaughter…"

He stopped his taunt before going further when she stepped forward. There were lots of different emotions competing inside of him. Anger had been very much in the foreground but the demonstration of squishing the chair was plenty to force him to hold back. “SHE’S MY DAUGHER!” He yelled, still with anger while grabbing something that was nearby, in this case a bowl and throw it against the wall. Smashing the pottery into pieces. “my daughter” he said again, this time the anger was out his voice, instead it sounded sad, maybe even with grief.

He was not stupid though, he knew he couldn’t stay. The darn girl left him no option. No matter how much it frustrated him, clearly she was stronger. If he wanted to live he had to go.
‘Fine!’ He said with clear annoyance in his tone ‘I’ll go..’

‘..but know this princess..’ he said the world princess full of distain ‘…you think you are doing her a favour, but she’ll never feel at home in your word, never feel like she belongs. Show her all the good things so she can miss them when you get tired of her and she gets to go back to nothing’ His voice wasn’t raised anymore, instead it had something eerie to it, a coldness. If his eyes could kill however, there would no longer be a princess standing in front of him just by the glare he was giving. ‘have fun explaining her you are the reason her father, the only family she’s got left, is now gone’

Then the sad expression came to his face again, his emotions seemingly changing by the flick of a switch. When he was near Elisa he squatted down and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. It was a genuine expression of love, his saying goodbye. He stroked her hair back before standing up and heading to the door. Before he walked out he turned to the princess again ‘you’ll regret this’ He simply stated, already he made his mind he wasn’t going to leave it at this, but at this moment there was nothing he could do.

While he made his leave a grunt noise came from Elisa’s corner. She started to gain consciousness though she wasn’t really aware of her surroundings yet. Hadn’t even opened her eyes yet for that matter, though it was a first sigh she’d be heading that way.

The acceptance to her command calmed her down, but only slightly. Her nails still dug into her palms in the effort to keep rage from boiling over. Never before had she felt like this. She would start a full on war in that moment if she had to. The need to protect her friend overwhelmed all reason. The stranger seemed to grasp that, thankfully.

"I am her family." Aileigh uttered icily, eyes following his movements closely. She observed his behaviour when he said goodbye and just for a moment, a brief moment, she wondered if he did really love Elisa. For the life of her, she just could not fathom how someone could love another while also repeatedly raising their hand. How was that love? The bruises on Elisa's body kept her unmoving with her request. He was not safe; he was a threat and he would be gone, one way or another.

Once he abandoned the cottage, Aileigh was swift to shut the door and lock it behind him. While listening to his footsteps fade away, she heard her friend stirring. She retreated to Elisa's side, rage subsiding to the need to care for the girl.

"Shh, you're okay. Everything is fine. You're safe."

She offered reassurance as she looked around, finding a bucket. Upon further inspection, she deemed the water within it clean. She then went about looking for cloth to use. She grabbed the first one she found and dipped it into the water, kneeling back at Elisa's side. Dabbing her friend's face, she attempted to wipe the blood away.

Slowly consciousness came back to her. She had opened her eyes but still needed some time to comprehend what was going on. She flinched a little when there was a motion by her side. When she heard the voice she looked over confused. It took her a little longer ten she normally would as her head was still gathering itself. ‘Aileigh?’ She sounded confused…she was confused. What was Aileigh doing here? She reached for her head, it was hurting. Her movements were slow as she carefully shifted herself to be more upright, her body was aching.

While Aileigh was looking for a cloth she was looking around the room, still a little dazed. However she was gathering herself and her mind was puzzling back together what had occurred, the memories coming back. When Aileigh dabbed her face with the cloth she winced a little. Being lost in thought she hadn’t seen it coming. She was a little startled, but it also was sensitive. She reached out and took over hold of the cloth. Seeing there was blood on the cloth made her frown, was it her lip? She carefully dabbed with the cloth.

As she put the cloth down again she noticed it felt thicker in some places. Slowly she opened it on her lap, her fingers tracing the embroided figure on it. She had always liked it, it was sad there now was blood on it. Then realisation hit her and she quickly moved the cloth to her side, hiding it under her leg while she looked around the room again. Only this time with her mind being a bit more clearer than before.

Aileigh? Where is my dad?

She looked back at her friend, examining her face closely, driven by her memory. She noticed Aileigh’s cheek was reddened. ‘did he…? I’m sorry’
She glanced at the door for a moment before looking down. She was still unaware of what had happened in the moments her lights were out. The obvious thing was to look at the door. Her house was small enough to be able to see it all, he wasn’t inside so he must be outside. Maybe he had went for a walk to try and cool down?
