Chopping wood is an important task that is affected by intelligence and the use of an axe. Axes average approximately 30-40 uses before breaking and here is the yield that most most can expect:

Results with axe
Intel 0 -25 average 3.5 per day
Intel 25-50 average 4.5 per day
Intel 50-75 average 5.0 per day
Intel 75+ average 6+ per day

Results without axe
Intel 0 -25 average 3.5
Intel 25+ average 4.0+

I would not recommend anyone chop unless you have over 20 intelligence and an axe. Please remember to equip your axe prior to chopping. Just having it in your inventory won't yield better results.

Does the type of axe make a difference in how long it lasts or how much wood is gathered? For example, is an oaken axe better than a plain axe?

As far as I'm aware, the number of bushels cut is only effected by the intelligence of the wood chopper and how happy the town clerical staff are. As long as the lumber jack has an axe, they will cut atleast 3 wood and have the chance of getting up to 11.
