I am currently a basic trained blacksmith, although am training towards my intermediate level.

Unfortunately no

Short swords and long swords are only available to be made at intermediate level.
I am looking to hopefully take classes to speed up my learning process though... Otherwise will take ages to reach

now I am going to keep it safely in my closet till I get advanced enough to go yvyrm hunting.

Am not to sure, but at least some protection is better than none at all.
I would guess that the heavy chainmail is better though. Once I have advanced to
the Intermediate level, I will definately be making some

Chain mail simply means that when I sneeze on you your clothing turns to liquid metal and sears the skin rather than your clothes turning to ash leaving you unscathed.
