[RP] A Home Coming

Post by thorn »

It had been nearly a year since Thorn had left her home in Fenia town. She had left it in the capable hands of a handful of servants who would keep it aired and cleaned for such time as she would return. There had been no time scale set, but a few weeks prior a note had been sent that Thorn intended to return. Following this there had been a mass of activity as dust sheets were removed from furniture, chimneys were swept, the garden paths cleared of the autumn leaves, and lawns mown, flower beds tidied. The Manor had always been Thorn's joy.
Image
The approach to the Manor was unchanged, the trees down the avenue that led to the large gates, closed for a long time now, the fortified Manor on its own island in the middle of a lake.Image
The bridge over the moat leading to the Manor gave a fantastic view of the manor and of the lake that surrounded, the sky reflected in the water, white clouds appearing to float there.

Inside the Manor all the rooms had or were in the process of getting a spring clean, the library
Image that was a favourite room for Thorn, and one she had sat for many hours in working when she had originally arrived in Fenia all those years before. The kitchen Image was warm, scents of fresh bread, pies, cake, a pot of stewing beef simmering away, vegetables already chopped to be added, stock being stirred to complete te mixture... The cook was in her element wanting to make sure her mistress was welcomed the only way she knew how. The scullery and the buttery, the stores all stocked up ready, waiting for the event of Thorn's return.

When Thorn had originally come to the Manor she had been astonished at the size, not really understanding why any house would want two dining rooms, one for formal occasions, the other she had used, a dining room
Image that she had found bright and warm. All these rooms were now spotless, not that they had not been before, just now not looking neglected. The formal dining room had never been used by Thorn, and this led into the ballroom, but both had stayed closed. Thorn had grown into the Manor, adapting to the size, and by the time she had left would not have questioned its size.

There were sounds from the front of the Manor, wood being placed in the fire grate of the sitting room
Image, a light and airy room where Thorn had often sat on an evening to sew or to play her favourite piano that stood to the back of the room, its lid up and a sheet of music stood on the stand.

Yet during the day Thorn had been known to use the library for the most part, and the morning room
Image that stood between the library and the kitchen, a room that in winter offered more warmth that the light sitting room.

The hall had recently been mopped, the large space with its marble floor shining in the sun light that shone through the windows high up. The wide staircase led up to the first floor, the bedrooms. One room was permanently closed, all forbidden to access. Away to left of the stairs, to the front of the Manor was a large room
Image, Thorn's bedroom. All the bedding and curtains were freshly laundered, the floors washed, the walls wiped. Fresh flowers had been placed in the vase on the window sill, and the bedcovers were folded back to air. All was ready. Across the hall Thorn's bathroom was stocked with towels and soap. The second floor was rarely used, now more for the servants.

Later that morning Thorn's carriage rolled along the avenue towards the gates of the Manor. Pausing long enough for the coach driver to jump down and to ring the bell for attention, the gates were soon opening and the carriage passing through. Thorn was sat idly looking out of the carriage as it entered the courtyard, and she looked up at the Manor somewhat nervously. It had been so long, and so much had changed. She had changed. As the carriage came to a halt she waited for the door to be opened for her. As the door was opened Thorn stood from her seat and lowering her head slightly to not bump it she left the carriage, and as her feet touched the ground her eyes went to a slight movement between the pillars either side of the front doors. She was amazed to see a cat... the cat she had last seen when in the tavern at Cork?

What are you doing here? she asked gently, crouching down and reaching out her hand to it.

Thorn glanced round but knew no one else had heard it. Looking back at the cat Thorn stroked its head, curious. He had said he was waiting?

What are you waiting for? Thorn thought to the cat, not speaking, testing...

See that my cases are taken in, Thorn said, scooping up the cat as Kathryn opened the front doors wide and came hurrying out, stopping short on seeing Thorn crouching by a cat on the front step.

I hope you don't mind... Thorn thought to the cat as she stepped into the hall of the manor, looing round, still carrying the creature, wondering what it's name is.

[Journey's end. Journey's beginning.]
-Duke conveys the impression that he doesn't mind your carrying him.
-In answer to your wondering about his name, a flood of images and sound pour into your mind.

Thorn looked at the cat... journeys? She looked round as Kathryn and the carriage driver brought in her cases, moving out of their way. Quietly Thorn moved towards the sitting room, and on opening the door she gently set the cat down.

Duke of... hmm you have an interesting name, she said quietly to the cat. Thorn's mind went back to the mention of a journey, no two... and she sat down on a couch smiling as she realised she had just ended one stage of her life, her leaving Bravia. That journey was very clearly over, and another to begin? Thorn was unsure. She had no intention of going anywhere, not in the near future.

Am I going on a journey?
she asked the cat, reaching out a hand to him to come to her. At that moment Kathryn entered, knocking first.

Would ma'am like some tea?

Thank you yes that would be welcome, and something to eat? Nothing large, Thorn added before turning back to the cat. Oh fetch a saucer of milk for my new friend would you? she called out as Kathryn was leaving the room.

Duke blinks at Thorn.

[Sift?!?]
Duke puffs a mildly annoyed sigh out from between his nostrils.

[Library.]
Duke walks toward Thorns outstretched hand.

Thorn's head was starting to hurt as she could not clear the images and sounds that were invading her mind, and she looked at Duke with a gentle frown, reaching to put a hand on her temple, shutting her eyes a moment to try to focus. The image, that face, so familiar, yet... Thorn shook her. She could not see who it was, and yet she knew them, or knew she should know them. The impression Thorn was getting was familiar, and she opened her eyes to look at the cat as her mind acknowledged that with this person she felt a safety, comfortable. Thorn racked her mind trying to remember the face, failing.

Who is this? she asked the cat silently. I know him...

Why have you come here? Thorn asked aloud, bending to scoop the cat up, settling him onto her lap. What are you trying to tell me?

Thorn paused. Had she heard library before? She thought so, even if unsure. Standing Thorn held the cat as she walked to the door of the sitting room, startling Kathryn as she was about to enter carrying a tray.

I'm going to the library, Thorn said distractedly as she passed the girl and walked into the hall, crossing it and opening the door she entered the library. Pausing in the doorway Thorn looked around. Now what? she thought. A cough behind her made Thorn move forward out of the way for Kathryn who entered and carried the tray of tea and a plate with a piece of cake on, plus a dish with milk in, onto the desk which was the far end of the room near a window.

That'll be all, Thorn said, seeing Kathryn hesitate, and waiting for her to leave the room before she then walked to the table, setting down the cat and reaching for the dish of milk and setting it down by the desk for him.

Duke is 'silent' regarding Thorn's first question.

[For you.] [Me.]

[Lunch!]

Thorn looked at the cat as he turned his attention to the milk and shook her head slightly. Moving to the chair of the desk she pulled it out and then sat down on it, watching the cat as she did. Then quietly she reached for the tea and picked it up, ignoring the cake, wanting to quench her thirst. After sipping at the hot tea Thorn set the cup down and sat quietly, her gaze moving round to look at the library, the shelves of books lining the walls. Her eyes paused on the seating area at the end of the library near the door from the hall, but she preferred her desk, the light here, and the only access behind her leading into the day room, a snug.

Why have you come for me? Thorn asked the cat, confused, not understanding. His answers led only to more questions, and not once did Thorn question why she could hear him, or wonder if she was hearing things.
